Forensic science council proposed by police
The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Royal Thai Police (RTP) may propose the setting up of a forensic science council, to curb criticism that police may tamper with evidence to aid wrongdoers.

Pol Gen Jaramporn Suramanee, an adviser to RTP who initiated the idea, said the plan was being considered and discussed with forensic academics and related agencies.

He said the council would set a good standard of personnel, labs and other related matters so as to maximise the efficiency of forensic science works, and thus help case investigations to be just, checkable and transparent. The council could also eradicate public criticism over alleged evidence tampering as the council would enable other people in the sector to partake in forensic works, not just police, he said.

How about, instead of spending more money on the problem, putting in place harsh penalties for evidence tampering, strict guidelines for evidence handling (including audit and oversight), and ruthless enforcement of both?

"The problem" is not just tampering "to aid wrongdoers", but also pilfering of evidence.

Agreed.

As the saying goes: If there is NO punishment there is no crime.

I remember a young English Girl being murdered in Chiang Mai a few years back, the clowns in brown, with there bumbling around destroyed the crime scene , so they charged a young guy from Sydney, the parents of the girl were not happy , the BBC were thrown out of Thailand for reporting the truth about the case and the shoddy police work , so the BBC got a private detective in and the Thai owner of the apartment block was eventually charged and the young Sydney guy was let off, that is the standard that still remains today and it wouldn't matter what you proposed the system is so shonky , corrupt , that I wouldn't trust them if the new Scotland yard moved in. bah.gif

Forensics investigations is a joke in Thailand. They always turn up several hours later stand around talking to friends , take photo's and then distroy what evidence that's left and leave without a clue.

A good idea to have a separate forensics body.

Thailand could, however, save the cost of setting up such a body by using expertise which already exists.

A select panel of ThaiVisa members could be on hand to analyse the crime, work out how it was committed and name the perpetrator(s) all without needing to visit the scene of the offence.

And that is why reform is needed in this area.

Good luck to the Junta and Pornthip who has offered constructive reform ideas to ensure the issues you highlighted do not happen again.

Forensic dept ? be cheaper and a lot more effective if they just contracted it out to some farang expert specialists who know what they are doing ... not to mention less corrupt and accurate. ... did I mention effective and know what they are doing ?
