I'm been here for four or five years and I'm planning to stay for many more years.

Does it matter?

25 posts is hardly a contribution.

OP, do you consider yourself a genius on Thailand because you are here at the minute?

I know people who visit Thailand from the UK who have in all likeliness forgotten more about this country than you will ever acquire regardless of how long you have been here.

They once told me about buffalos, ladyboys and why girls wear numbers in night-time entertainment venues. Their knowledge of temples was somewhat vague, but there you go. I remembered most.........................wink.png

I think it is relevant because the actual experience of someone who is here for only a few weeks a year makes for a very different opinion to those who live here permanently and have done for years. To give an example professionally I deal with so many people (men mainly) who after a few holidays here decide to sell up at home and move here to start a new life. The reasons I am given are things like; the people are are so genuine, kind and friendly, everyone smiles all the time, nothing is a problem, it's so cheap etc etc etc. The advice I normally give them, that is rarely followed, is don't sell up at home, come to live here for 6/12 months and then decide. I followed it up by saying that things are not as they appear at first, it's still a great place to live, but they should see the true picture before doing things that cannot be undone at home.

Personally I try to make my posts either pure fact, or opinion based upon fact.

I have a little flat above soi Cowboy and have never traveled further than the end of the soi, but I am an expert on all things Thai

^^ Why would you need to go beyond the end of the soi anyways?!?! That's just crazytalk.

Fair point though that living here, or having lived here for decades, one could still have a very limited vision on what's going on. On the other hand, de Toqueville only spent 9 months in America and 180 years later his writings are still famous.

Right now? No. 175 days from now? Absolutely.

The end is coming!

the majority? any stats to back that up? an opinion based on fact?

I think I may have known your grandad, did he used to walk up and down Oxford Street carrying a sandwich board that said exactly the same thing, he was a nutter too? laugh.png

Guess all my posts have been within Thailand, been here 11 years, cannot remember ever posting on here from a internet caffee when I have been visiting other places around Asia, even visiting Australia for the odd week have never bothered taken my laptop, do not have a Tablet thing or anything different then a cheap mobile phone [no cam or internet far to small and fiddly to use anyway so just a under 500 baht phone]

There was the I have been longer then you thread a while ago which is a part 2 to this thread.

I don't post from Thailand I post from my phone or ipad. I don't have an app for my Thailand to post from :(

I post on Thai Visa from countries other than Thailand and the UK . . . sometimes.

It depends where I am at the time.

Retired here in October 2010 and except for half a dozen short trips back to the U.S. and/or Vietnam have been here since that time.

Does having a Thai wife and Thai child trump 2 week millionaire?

How about 4 week millionaires, do they know twice as much as the 2 weeker?

I've never set foot in America, though I am sure I could write an encyclopedia on the subject

There is a conversion rate that immigration put out regarding the wife plus your own kids v weekend millionaire ratio. Another one re bg/gf wife plus non own kid v weekend millionaire ratio. Can't remember which was higher.

did you ever meet NO.42 in sabai land, you know the one in the baby pink outfit? or was it 24?.

patts.1980"s she learnt me a lot about Thailand,30 yrs and still don't know nuffing.well just a bit.

I think the salient point is 'where your head is'.

I go out there for a weekend or 2 per year.

With the ammount of whinging and whining about all things Thai, I doubt many live here full time.
