I understand that you will have to prove that those Ipads etc, will power up before you go on a plane. I am going to the UK soon and my Ipad has an intermittent fault where sometimes it won't power up. Does this mean that I risk my Ipad being confiscated? Also, in the past my laptop would not power up, although the problem has been fixed now.

Even if I get my Ipad fixed, who's to say it won't power up again anytime.

Things do break down, so if anyone is unlucky, their Ipad or whatever is going to be confiscated?

From what I read it is for the USA only.

No, it has been changed to airports that include Asia, so that would mean us.

If you spend your time worried about things that you have absolutely no control over, perhaps your better off not flying at all.

Otherwise, turn your laptop on and iPad on and hope for the best. I'm sure there are options other than immediate incineration of your property.

All the German newspapers told it is for flights to USA only. But all airports.

But I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention on it.

And you are right, also UK is spying on the mobile phones and laptop, so it makes sense that they require the battery charged as well.

I hope there are, up till now everything ie, sharp instrument, over so much liquids, are taken off you, you know the rules and just don't take certain things in your cabin baggage. But equipment costing thousands???? I think it's time air passengers were told of other options. I have not heard of anything up till now.

If your laptop or whatever does not power up, maybe due to a faulty switch or something, I wonder if they can tell if the battery is charged up.

No it must power up, that is the point of it.

Official: if it does not power up, the inside of the laptop/mobile phone might be a bomb which magically can't be detected in XRay.

Everyone know: It is so they can demand on entry to turn on the device and check what files you have. USA is doing it, UK is doing it and Germany is doing it.

If it can't boot up they can't check it easily......and if you think that it is just a conspiration theory .....on the official version if it does not turn on, you might be a terrorist with a mobile phone bomb.

H90, I see what you say, so if anyone cannot boot their thing up, they have a choice, they either miss their plane or let them confiscate it.

It is, but LHR do not have a separate security track for US flights so they treat everyone the same.

It does depend on the carrier.

Some will courier to your destination for you at no charge, others will allow you to rebook a later flight free so you can go and charge your device.

Best advice is to go to your carrier's website and look at their policy.

just buy a new battery ?its easy via ebay ....... its likely to spread worldwide sooner than later

In my case the battery is not faulty, sometimes the Ipad switches on OK, and sometimes it takes a few minutes. My worry is when I come to switch it on at the airport, and it does not boot up.

Is this check only happening at LHR? Is it not happening at Swampy?

It's not exactly rocket science to modify a device battery to have enough oomph to power up the kit, but still have space for enough Semtex to bring down a flight.

PanAm 103 was brought down by a bomb concealed in a piece of electronics, in 1988!

It will still be going through a scanner, the "power on" test will be after that.

The scanner operator can divert your bag to a secondary check at the press of a button.

If they ask every single person to turn on every single piece of electronics... well then I think you can expect to have to turn up at the airport a lot earlier.

According to the local news in the UK,if the device cannot be powered on and used, it will not be allowed on the plane. They will have chargers on hand and power adapters.

If the device is refused, they will hold it for your return or POST IT free of charge to wherever, in some cases even allow you to take another flight (Virgin & BA).

According to BBC news.

That makes a lot more sense......In Austrian newspaper they told they will be confiscated and I had my doubts if that can be true.

With charger on hand, if you aren't late, you charge 15 min and it will be good enough for a quick check.

So you turn on your iPad or Laptop and a suitcase blows up........................

By the way, if your iPad is faulty........buy a new one!

There is a point there. If said suicide bomber realises he can't take his mobile bomb on the plane, what's he going to do instead?

You could pack the iPad in your checked baggage?

All have seen talks about checks on hand baggage

I am with Crossy,

If someone wants to, there is still quite a bit off

space inside a laptop for explosive, along side the working gubbins
