How many farangs live in Surin?

Are most of the farangs I see when I go there just visiting during their yearly holiday?

Is the Farang Connection the farang owned bar in town?

I've got a local (100km radius) customer base of just over 1000. According to my guest book. There are about 3,000 farangs living within that radius ( so 2,000 hav'nt been or never heard of me)although the total number of different guests that have signed in, in three years is over 3,000.

There are suprisingly a large number living in Surin.

There seem about 15 - 20 regulars in the Farangconnection, then on top of that the people like me, who regularly travel to Surin and make an appearance about once a month or so.

But if you go around Surin, you see farangs everywhere. People keep telling me they know of 8 farangs living in the next fillage from my wife's. In our Village there are 3 other farangs who are infrequent visitors, and myself. So in two small villages in the middle of no-where there can be 12 farangs.

Sometimes I sit and think why a farang would want to go to Surin, either the city or the province.

But when you compare it to the other near-by provinces, I find it very appealing.

Firstly, outside the city, it is the epitome of Rural Life. In some ways it looks like the lifestyle has not changed much in the last 100 years or so.

There are many interesting things to see, from the World Famous Elephant Roundup, to Silk Villages, Silver Villages, and other interesting attractions, there is plenty to occupy yourself for a week.

The City has everything you want, and also it does not have the stuff you don't want. There is no Starbucks, No McDonalds and no Hungry Jacks. There is a Big C, Macro and Lotus. You also can buy very fresh food at the local Markets, and make a great traditional meal. I Like the PRasat Market, where you regularly see farangs.

I loke the Tong Tarin Hotel. Its an older room, but if you turn up in Low Season, there are some fantastic deals to be had. The last time I stayed there, I got the Jr Suite for about 1,500 a night.

Obviously, you cannot go past the Farang Connection for lunch, and also finding out the things you can do. Even though I have been coming to Surin, I did not know there was a place to go fishing. I also will commend the #2 Breakfast. The advice you can get from there is invaluable.

Thare is also al the other stuf you can get easily in Surin, Like Sattelite gear, TV's etc. Also, I have found in Cab Choeng, about 50km south of the City an excellent electrical repair service. Some Kind-hearted person, has gone to the trouble of training people with disabilities how to repair domestic appliances like TV's stereos, etc etc. Having had repair work done before, I was sceptical how it would be done and what the Farang Price would be. I was very happy to see with my own eyes the standard of the workmanship, and the manner in which it was conducted. It reminded me of the Repair Lab at Household-Name dot com. What made me even more happy was the price. To get a TV fixed with parts and about 1 hour of labor, and a new remote control came to the sum of 400 Baht. They also lifted the TV in and out of the back of my truck.

I also find the people and also the government officials friendly and helpful. Quite often they will come and talk to you, not to extract money etc, but just to say hello, and maybe pratice their English a little. I remember earlier this year when my wife lost her Taibein Baan, we went to the local Police Station to report it lost. I would have talked to the police at the front for maybe 10 - 15 minutes, just about local stuff.

While on the subject of the Government etc, at the southern tip of Surin, there is a Borarder crossing into Cambodia. Even though there are 2 hotel / Casino's there, it is nothing like the "Wild West" Poipet, rather its a very quiet place, and you can cross the border in less than 5 minutes, including the formalities of both countries. FRom there you can travel onwards to Ankor, about 150km away.

So, Surin is a great place to visit, either for a holiday or as an "Infrequent Resident". What I do like to see more is there is a little bit of work there now for Farangs. A few years ago there was none.

Anyway, go and see for yourself.

its called British humour not humor.

If you don't like it ....best not to come to the piss up !

Yep, you're right on that one. Even though I did a "google spelling check" of my original post it didn't come up with an error. Guess it couldn't differentiate the difference between British humour and Amerian humor. :D

Sorry. :o
