Craigslist Thailand is full of scammers? What happened to real people?

ThaiVisa and Baht&Sold are also full of scammers, offering motorbikes and cars. Maybe other items too, but I only check in cars and bikes.

ThaiVisa have always reacted to my complaints and taken out the ads, whereas Baht&Sold didn't.

Once I was threatened. They told me to pay me a visit. They never came.

Remember: if an offer looks too good... it (probably) is.

Personally I haven't been scammed yet, but once we drove about 250 km to buy a bike from a Thai man, saying he owns a bike shop..

My wife called him the same day, telling him we are on our way. When we arrived there at the given address there was nobody and the guy

had switched of his phone. Very strange.

Be careful.

Same reason AliExpress are booming - they make sure you don't get ripped off on AliBaba.

Sure, I once reported to Aliexpress a listing that was clearly offering a counterfeit item, since the seller had already admitted in the chat that it was counterfeit.

After 6 weeks they responded and asked some very stupid questions. In short they were not interested in my report.

I reported it also to the genuine manufacturer, and he was also not interested.

There is a link on craigslist called "avoiding scams and fraud" read it before using craigslist. A big clue is no local phone number and shipping via an "agent". From the site:

Avoiding Scams

You can avoid would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules:

  • DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON—follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
  • NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is likely a scammer.
  • FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON—BANKS WILL HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
  • CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, provide escrow, "buyer protection" or "seller certification."
  • NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.).
  • AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.
  • DO NOT RENT HOUSING OR PURCHASE GOODS SIGHT-UNSEEN—that amazing rental or cheap item may not exist.
  • DO NOT SUBMIT TO CREDIT OR BACKGROUND CHECKS until you have met the job interviewer or landlord/agent in person.

I have used craigslist successfully numerous times. I did once receive an obviously fake cashiers check for $34K USD for a boat I was selling in Hawaii. I emailed the guy back and said that the bank discovered the fraudulent check when I was trying to deposit it and the FBI and local police would like to talk to him. I never heard from him again.

But since you had received the check already, the boat was gone already ?

My problem is not getting scammed. My problem is I can't find serious buyers and I get more emails from scammers rather than buyers. It became scammers paradise for sure.

jessie priceless 07:46 (This is another phone ad)

Another possible scammer (according to my instinct)

wendy williams <[email protected]> 05:24
l will like to know if your ad is still available

I'm sure no farang wakes up at 05:24 and sends email, besides that Ad is just over a day old.

Finally, a new scammer:

WilliamsCapital GroupsInter <[email protected]> 03:35
I am interested on your Phone is't still available ?

(Another phone ad)

WilliamsCapital GroupsInter <[email protected]> 03:30
I am interested on your Phone is't still available ?

As usual, I report their email as scam (flag) but nothing happens.

Internet scammers are "working" with every site now, even Paypal and E-Bay. Also many online retailers paid in advance never delivers the goods...That's probably the reason why Lazada was created, receiving the payment just on deliver. Wonderful marketing!

Lazada is great. I would never trust a seller here in Thailand to deliver goods once i've paid so payment on delivery solves the problem. I use them a lot now. Actually their service is very good.

If you mean small shops in Thailand, owned by Thai person, they usually don't cheat people and send products as they have physical shop and online business is just a side-business for them. I bought a few pieces (my wife talked on the phone of course) myself and my wife bought several items without problems.

Scammers on Craigslist is Not from Thailand. Thats why they ask shipping out of country :)

  • 5 months later...

Same reason AliExpress are booming - they make sure you don't get ripped off on AliBaba.

Not exactly: I ordered a smartphone through AliExp. to be delivered in Bkk. After a week they notified me order was cancelled because of supplier problem. Then I got a notice from supplier that item had been shipped. Ali then resubmitted the payment. Phone never arrived but Ali has yet to credit my account...3 months of back and forth messages.

Beware of Ali. It is a state owned company, owned by a heinous government, and you cannot expect good service from thieves. China is a one way street. They want your cash, but are only willing to offer little for it. Have you ever tried to sell something to China? They are the most protectionist nation on earth.
