Caretaker Thaksin applies to build tourist hotel in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya - Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is under pressure to halt his planned importation of wild animals and birds from Kenya, has expressed interest in building a hotel in the country, officials said on Wednesday.

Kenyan Tourism and Wildlife Minister Morris Dzoro said authorities were scrutinizing the premier's application.

"Thaksin has asked us about putting up a hotel here in Kenya and we are considering his application just like any other investor," Dzoro told a press conference here.

In November 2005, Kenya signed an agreement to give Thailand 175 wild animals and birds for the Mae Hia Safari Park in its northern Chiang Mai province, sparking angry protests from wildlife welfare activists and conservationists.

Within weeks, the controversial deal was halted by a Nairobi high court pending conclusion of a suit challenging its legality.

In 2005, the Kenyan tourism sector earned 648 million dollars (516 million euros), a 15-per cent increase overall from 2004, making it among the most profitable pillars of the east African nation's economy.

Last year, a consortium owned by the Saudi tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bought five famed luxury hostelries and safari lodges in Kenya from the British-based Lonrho conglomerate.

PM refused news saying that he has investein hotel business in Kenya

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra refuses the news that he has invested his money in a hotel business in Kenya.

He explained that the leader of Kenya used to induce Thailand’s business sector to invest in its hotel business. The leader said that there are many tourist attractions in Kenya, but the country is lacking the number of five-star hotels. He informed that some entrepreneurs of Thailand have the capability to invest in foreign countries. He, however, said that he has never had a thought that he will invest in a business in other countries. He said that he has no time to reflect on this matter at this moment as he has to consider on the verdict of the Office of the Attorney-General in proposing the matter of dissolving the Thai Rak Thai Party.

Besides, he said that he will resume “Prime Minister Thaksin Talks to the People” radio program. He said that the program will restart on this Saturday.

I didn't do it : Thaksin

Confusion reigns as Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday dismissed statement from a Kenyan minister of tourism that he plans to build a hotel in the West African nation.

Speaking to reporters, Thaksin, who is under pressure to halt his planned importation of wild animals and birds from Kenya, said he had merely plan to make suggestions to the Thai private sector to invest in the African country because of its attractions.

Thaksin said he has not have the time to discuss the matter with the Thai hotel chain but mentioned Dusit Thani and Plaza Athene' as sound candidates with capacity to do so.

Kenyan tourism and Wildlife Minister Morris Dzoro said yesterday authorities were scrutinising Thaksin's application.

"Thaksin has asked us about putting up a hotel here in Kenya and we are considering his application just like any other investor," Dzoro told a press conference in Nairobi yesterday.

Last November, Kenya signed an agreement to give Thailand 175 wild animals and birds for the Chiang Mai's Night Safari Park. The move sparked angry protests from wildlife activists and conservationists.

The plan was halted by a Nairobi high court pending conclusion of a suit challenging its legality.

Making matter worse, Vice Minister for the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, Plodpasop Suratsawadee, had announced a plan to open a restaurant in the safari that sells wildlife meat.

The ministry was planning to propose to the Cabinet for debate but, amid a growing public pressure, the government decided to backed down.

Do you remember the little narak tears he had during his famous TV speech begining april, right after he saw the King in Hua Hin ?

It sounds like a dozen years ago !

Mister T. is back. At full speed.

"Vice Minister for the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, Plodpasop Suratsawadee, had announced a plan to open a restaurant in the safari that sells wildlife meat."

The guy gets a position as Minister of Natural Resource and Environment and opens a wildlife restaurant?

The Prime Minister gets elected, resigns, calls an election, gets relected, resigns again, the election is deemed invalid so he returns.

Beam me up Scotty.

Thaksin brushes off Kenyan news

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday denied news reports from Kenya that he was planning to invest in tourism there, saying he was too busy focusing on keeping his political party alive to think of business.

“It is true I have visited Kenya and they have invited us from Thailand to invest in the hotel business there,” Thaksin told reporters.

“[but] I have no time for this sort of thing, they are just about to dissolve my party. I am very busy.”

Thaksin was responding to news reports from Nairobi that the Kenyan government was considering an application from the Thai prime minister to construct a hotel in the east African country.

According to the reports, Kenyan Tourism and Wildlife Minister Morris Dzoro said Thaksin had applied to build the hotel and that the government was scrutinizing his bid.

Thaksin however, denied making any such bid but said he had agreed to recommend the investment opportunity to two major industry players after the Kenyan government had sought his help in finding private investors for Kenya’s growing tourism industry.

Thaksin said the two major investors were The Dusit Group, and Charoen Sirivadhanabakdi – the founder and a major shareholder of Thai Beverage Plc, which recently listed on the Singapore stock exchange – but said he had not yet had time to talk to them.
