Peat Moss

Featured Replies

Have not been able to get peat moss here in Chiang Mai. Does anyone know what I can use instead for my plants.

Thanks in advance

If this is for the garden soil and the desired effect is to loosen the soil then I suggest using rice hulls...in Thai it is called krep kong. If you go to small rice mills (they are everywhere out in the small villages where rice is grown) you can probably get some for free.

If you are planning on using it for potting then a substitute (widely in use in the west too) is coir (shredded coconut fiber). Not sure what it is called in Thai tho.

Hi

My local garden centre sells his own mix which includes a lot of peanut husks which are supposed to be rich in nitrogen. It certainly seems to work as plants are thriving.

Unfortunately so are the peanut plants which are prolific. :o
