PHNOM PENH, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has dispatched 4,138 laborers to South Korea in the first six months of 2014, down eight percent from 4,503 over the same period of last year, the figures of the Labor Ministry showed Thursday.

In South Korea, Cambodian laborers work in sectors of agriculture and construction, said a labor official, who asked not to be named.

"Laborers in South Korea earn between 1,000 and 1,500 U.S. dollars a month, much higher than those in Thailand and Malaysia, who make from 250 to 300 U.S. dollars only," said the official.

According to the figures, during the first six months of the year, Cambodia has also sent 6,673 workers to Thailand, 35 to Malaysia, 13 to Japan, and 109 to work as maids in Singapore.

The Labor Ministry estimates that Cambodian laborers abroad have remitted around 250 million U.S. dollars back home in Cambodia per year.
