Road Dawei (Myanmar) to Thai-Border?

Featured Replies

Trying to find out about the progress of the construction of the road from Dawei to the Thai-Border near Kanchanabury. (Forgot the name of the Border-Crossing near Kanchanabury. But it's the one that was opened for Visa-Runs for Farangs and then closed again).

Depending on the source of information, comments range from " road is completed and is at the Thai-Border already, it's just the Thais that are dragging their feet and have not yet managed to link the road from the border to Kanchanabury",

all the way to:

"The construction of the road has not even started yet".

Between those extremes, where do we stand?

I could imagine, that once the link between the border and Kanchanabury stands for good, the border-crossing could be of use for Farangs (and their visa-matters) again.

Cheers.

Nothing very recent - but try this link in the Myanmar Forum as a start, and perhaps send the member tommmm a PM, or make a post to bump the thread.

There was another thread in the Myanmar section, can't find it offhand.

Oh and the name of the border crossing point is Phu Nam Ron (Thai side) to Htee Khee (Myanmar side)

I thought come August visa runs were going to be a thing of the past, maybe it was one hop out/in but after that it's got to be by plane.

Whatever it is the authorities are cracking down and it's going to mess up a lot of people.

Swissie, I had a word with a friend that works at Dawei.

They said it takes about 5 hours, the road is still bad, muddy and land slides with heavy rains everyday at the moment.

Sounds like great trip to do on a trail bike right now

The road from Kanchanaburi to Ban Kao and Lamsai has had a lot of work done in the past couple of months, a lot of widening to 4 lanes and resurfacing, they havent tackled past Lamsai yet though

Thanks for info. If that's any indication that finally Thai and Myanmar "Brains" have concluded that a land connection between Dawei and Thailand would be nothing less than opening a new trade route affecting the whole of S/E Asia, with the main beneficiary being Thailand.

At some point in the future, this project will be completed. If not, it will strictly be "may pen rai". This could not possibly come as a surprise, because the Thai Economy is based on plastic-bags (Tesco) and "mai pen rai".

Cheers.

They seem pretty serious with daily signs of progress, also the newly completed buildings at Phu Nam Ron for immigration and customs show signs they are very much getting ready

Strange - why I write like that ?

I went many time to Kanchanaburi province and liked to discover the roads who are going to Myanmar ;

March 2010 ; I drived on the road from Sai_Yok to Ban_Bong_Ti;route n* 3343 on my PN Map about Kanchanaburi ( u can find it easily in Bangkok ).

a very beautiful and excellent road, not very wide , so if u take it , do it with prudence !;

about one kilometer before arriving the border, no route, only a pist in red ground;

we arrived to a border police station ; a thai policeman, athai dog and many thai hens were there...tongue.png

never went to Phu_Nam_Ron because there is no road to go to the border;

If u have a look athe map of the border, u can see there is a red road which is going from Bong_Ti_Pass to Davey/Tavoy ;

and nothing even a bridle path smile.png going to Tavoy .

There is another " border" with Myanmar ;

When going to Three Pagoda Pass which is actually the only official border ( close to-day, I was there a few weeks ago, nobody can travel there );

Arriving at Thong_Pha_Phum, take the road 3272 which goes to the big dam ;

go until the road is finish; Chong Hin Kong Pass

there is another house with a thai policeman and a thai dog cheesy.gif ;

He said to us we can go ahead; we did...

the route is a dead end, a cul de sac ; DSCN 2678

There is a road to the Border at Phu Nam Raon and they have just completed new buildings there for immigration as it will be the major road to the seaport of Duwei in Myanmar, currently the check point only seems to be open to Thai, they only need a border pass to cross, passport not needed for short trips.

So, in other words: Nothing new.

To others: This thread has absolutely nothing to do with the infamous "Pagoda-Crossing"!

Cheers.

Border is open to foreigners if they have a Myanmar visa stamped in their passport in advance.

Thais also need passports and visas for traveling further inside Myanmar. It's possible they may be allowed to travel to Dawei on an ID card but uncertain. I'd highly recommend a passport and visa just in case because the Myanmar authorities could change their entry requirements at any time, without notice.
