Cambodian court convicts Swiss pedophile for child sex purchase

PHNOM PENH, July 25 (Xinhua) -- A Cambodian court on Friday convicted a Swiss national of child sex purchase and sentenced him to a suspended two-year term, according to a verdict announced by Judge Chhay Kong.

Rudolf E. Knuchel, 63, was arrested in October 2013 after an underage boy disclosed having performed sexual activities with him in exchange for money.

"The court decides to sentence him to 2 years in jail, suspended for one year, for purchase of child prostitution," said the verdict.

The verdict also ordered the deportation of Knuchel after he finishes his prison term. In addition, it ordered the convict to pay 2,500 U.S. dollars as compensation to the victim.

With the suspension, Knuchel will be released from jail in two months.

Child protection non-government organization Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE) said it was the third time Knuchel was arrested in Cambodia. In 2000, he was arrested on suspicion of abusing multiple underage boys, but was later released.

In 2009, he was arrested again and found guilty for sexual intercourse with a minor under 15, being then sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Seila Samleang, country director of APLE, expressed his satisfaction with the deportation order.

"This case is a warning that the lack of deportation order for foreign child sex offenders endangers our children," he said. "If he had been expelled from Cambodia in his 2010 conviction, Knuchel would not have made more victims."

Cambodia launched an anti-pedophile operation in 2003 in a bid to end its reputation as a haven for child sex offenders. Since then, dozens of foreigners have been imprisoned for child sex crimes.

They forgot to order clinical castration prior to deportation. Let's hope his last two months in jail will rectify this omission. <removed>
