I think you are 100% correct.

My Red book has fallen apart on the spine and I guess 2 visits back at the very big Chiang Mai police centre the officer called an officer who came quickly, took my book and returned it 2 hrs later well repaired.

But since then it's fallen apart again. My Thai adult son is nowadays responsible for these book and he keeps them safe.

My last visit to the CM police centre was about 1 year back. Pleasant new officer, good English. Seems to be very knowledgeable.

When all completed he touched my son's hand to get his attenton, then asked me 'how old are you now?' I responded 81 years old.

He then looked at my son and said 'there's no bring your father again, just come around the 5 year date, bring the RED book and a new photo'.

I don't know if that's a national policy or just at CM.

I haven't needed to provide a photo for the last two visits to the police station. I was advised that after twenty years a photo was no longer required.

Interesting and logicl, I guess that one original purpose of the RED book updates was in reality a 'live'check whether the PR person was still alive. But check if alive at 5 year intervals is quite a gap.

Bottom line, the PR status is certainly handy and has value, even if it's not that well known.

Take care.

Have had PR for the past 35 years. Now elderly, I will no longer be travelling outside Thailand. Do I need to renew my UK passport?

Never heard of that rule. But as they have no idea of all of the rules themselves, it may well be BS. Many I know get a re entry permit with their annual extension each year, just in case, but don't necessarily use it. I have done that a few times myself.

A couple of years ago I went to get a new 12 month Exit Permit for PR, and it turned out I hadn't travelled out of Thailand in the past year. The officer said she needed to cancel the old one before she could issue a new one. Apparently it was a bureaucratic headache for her, involving the opening, stamping and reopening of several huge, dusty ledgers, plus lots of mumbled complaints about the process.

I was then advised to not get the exit stamp again until I was sure I was going to travel.

Do you have a pink ID card? If not, you may need a valid UK passport for banking, hotels etc

For immigration purposes probably not, but you may well need one in order to obtain banking services if you need to visit a bank or if they ask for KYC info. There are probably other instances unrelated to immigration where a passport may be necessary.

I had the same experience years ago. I think I had used the multiple entry visa once, but still had a couple of months' validity on it. I was asked if I wanted to cancel the old one. I told the officer it did not have long enough validity to accommodate my planned trip. I did not hear any complaints, but could sense it would cause the officer additional work.

Recently got a new visa when the old one still had a week or so of validity but was not asked about cancellation.

And just in case you do need to fly back to UK for medical or family reasons.

If your UK passport is expired (perhaps for a long period) it may take some time and with complicaions to get it renewed.

A different point, if (repeat if) you receive a pension or similar benefits every month from the UK it's a bit surprising that the UK authorities haven't checked if you are still alive. (Many countries do check that you are still alive on 5 year or similar basis, Australia is one example).

Is it something to do with having permanent residence?

I think @Doctor Tom has left the building after his confused/confusing post.

Seems to me that when there's aleady several 5 year photo updates the photo becomes a moot point - some police stations which handle this update do want a new photo some don't. Brings the question: is this an actual regulation or a 'local regulation'?

However what does seem to be a national standard is that the PR holder or family member or agent must bring the RED book in and a new 5 year date added, but new photo not needed at some stations.

But this has another twist; as I've reported in this thread, August 2025 my Thai adult son took me to the police centre here in Chiang Mai where there is an office specific to this subject. The friendly officer, spoke good English asked me how old I was, I responded 81, the office then immediately told my son 'next time no need to bring your dad, just bring the red book and a new photo and some cash'.

If doing the re-entry permit and PR endorsement at Bangkok CW, is it possible to do it within the same day, or you have to leave your pp and pr book and collect next day?

There is no PR endorsement, PR is issued for life, it never needs renewal or review. In other words you don't ever need to go to immigration again, except:

Situation 1: When you need to get an exit and re-entry stamp, and that doesn't include any form of review of your original PR approval.

Situation 2 : when your PR book is full of stamps (stamps inserted by Thai immigration when you depart and re-enter Thailand). When the book is full you must go to CW and the small team who take care of this will issue a new PR Book, and that doesn't include any form of review of your original PR approval.

When you apply for an exit and re-entry permit the officer takes the next number from a progressive list of numbers - purely a beaurocratic process, not a renewal of your actual PR. (As above PR never needs renewal or review.)

The small team at CW who do this complete the whole exercise add the stamp, add the dates and add the beaurocratic number (as above) in one operation in both books (PR book and exactly same stamp and details in your passport, all complsted within a few minutes and you can collect your PR Book and passport immediately.

And I hope that in the near future the Interior Ministry will provide a plastic ID card specific to PR holders, with:

  • Full name in both Thai and English.

  • Full address in both Thai and English.

  • The expiry date should of course continue to show 'cheewit' (lifetime) in Thai script but Lifetime in English could be added.

  • The details currently on the back of the card are removed and there's a comment that the card is valid for use anywhere in Thailand, in both Thai and English script.

Sure, none of us know what the future holds for us from now to death.

We can't anticipate what could happen tomorrow or in 5 years time (here. in home county or in a never before visited other country, which could necessitate showing a personal current passport.

Your choice of course but i wouldn't let your passport lapse.

Not immediately in Bangkok in my experience but typically an hour or longer if you don't arrive sufficiently in time before lunchtime closure from noon to 1:00 pm.

Turnaround same. I think 3 days is standard.

The small team at CW who do the 'PR book full' replacement is in my opinion the weak link in PR matters.

Preparing a replacement book is done by hand to transfer the main details to the new book, and takes just a few minutes. My last replacement (10 years ago) I had come from Chiang Mai and I was in a wheelchair pushed by my Thai adult son.

I said to my son "We need to come back from Chiang Mai in 4 days time on xx/xx/xxxxx" in English.

The head lady of this eam heard what I said and instantly said "we can do it while you wait in less than I hour if you need to travel again from Chiang Mai.

I hadn't forgotten the previous time I had to replace the full book (in those days I was travellling regionally and to Nth Asia frequently and often doing 4 trips in and out a week and my PR book got full very quickly.

I went to CW (in my whelchair), I approached the desk of the head PR team at 11:05 am*, she instantly and rudely said (in good Enflish) "why do you come so close to lunch time, you should have more respect for my staff, they need to have lunch too". Then she got up and she walked out followed by the 2 other members of her team.

They returned at 2:15pm. I had been sitting there (in my wheelchair) from 11:05 a.m. She said 'What do you want?'

  • *11:05 a.m. I wrote the time down because I was a bit shocked.

I said yes I will come back to CW from Chiang Mai. The PR book lady then told her staff to prepare a new book, and it took about 10 minutes.

Then I moved across to the team who do the multiple Exit and Re-entry stamp (less than 20 second walk). The head lady pleasantly said 'We don't have room for you to bring your wheelchair in, please sit in the normal waiting area and we will come to see you there.

The multiple Exit and Re-entry stamp was completed in less than 10 minutes, then the head lady said "where are you going from here?" My son said to the disabled parking near the main entrance to CW. The multiple Exit and Re-entry stamp lady said quickly I will go with you to ensure you are comfortable in the car. She quickly grabbed 2 small bottles of cold water and came with us. She politely helped to get me in the car (not really needed) then quickly opened the 2 bottles of water, gave me one and gave my son one bottle.

She also gave my son her business card and said "I know you can get a new Exit and Re-entry stamp in Chiang Mai but if you'e here in Bkk call me and well make a plan to do the new stamps very quickly, no need to visit CW.

A very pleasant experience.
