BANGKOK: -- Three insurgents killed in a gunfight on Monday wore wristwatches of the same Netherlands-based brand on their right hands, signifying their graduation from terrorist training overseas apart from self-identification among the operatives, security sources said yesterday.

Citing confessions allegedly made by Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) commandos in custody, security sources said there were at least six operatives in each of the roughly 500 villages in the three southernmost provinces, or around 3,000 active highly skilled insurgents ready for operation.

Under the RKK's ultimate objective, each group of operatives is required to carry out at least one attack every month - 500 incidents each month, or 6,000 a year.

However, as a result of effective operations by security authorities, many cells have defected, given up their ideology or been disabled, while those continuing are not capable of carrying out attacks as frequently as they would wish to, the sources added.

Meanwhile, one more victim of the car-bomb attack in Yala's Betong district was pronounced dead, bringing the death toll to three. The latest victim was identified as Raifa Saelee, 28, from Chiang Rai.

I find it difficult to believe that there have ever been anything like 500 incidents a month.....but it does seem that they are occuring daily......

Wrist watches of the same brand on the 3 deceased militants means they are trained off shore......IMO, a rather irrational assumption

Wow! This is pretty damn accurate. I was on the first team sent after the Bali Bombings to train up Detachment 88; actually create it. J.I. Was most definitely involved, at one time or another, in the Thai Southern issue. However, I suspect other training was more recent, and not J.I. Even open source info suggests this.

And don't tell us things like that. How many terrorist "sleepers" dumped their watches today. I never cease to be amazed (amazing Thailand) at the amount of sensitve stuff that is blurted to the media before an operation. A cynical person might deduce that it is part of Thai "fairness" to give all evil doers a chance decamp to K.L, Paris or Rangoon if the newspapers or TV say "Pol Gen XXXX says he is coming with sixteen men from XYZ regiment wearing this colour clothing, to this address next week to arrrest you. The police & army should totally ban all staff from talking to media & refer them to only media savvy staff.
