Inflation under control

Noticed today at Big C extra that the majority of the Casino products ( their house brand) had their price increased by 15% overnight. These are all import products

So far for their commitment to freeze prices. Has the Euro increased by 15% overnight, I don't think so.

This is not the first increase this year for people who want to claim that there is no inflation.

For example, the herb spread cheese that was 65 Baht end of last year is now 95 Baht. Spaghetti sauces that were 65 last year, and then went to 75 increased to 85 in the last two days.Small size went from 35 to 39 and now 45 Baht. Did your foreign currency also increase in value with the same amount ?

Can't sum them up all, but literally hundreds of products increased ny 15% in the last 2 days.

The market on SSCC will have one ( even) more regular visitor.

No question that the inflation numbers are manipulated.  How can you have accurate numbers when excluding fuel and food and including housing which is manipulated upward by limiting supply?

The word inflation in the title was actually the purest sarcasm, as it should be understood as greed.

The herb cheese at 95 Baht cost 0,85 Euro (37 Baht) at their branches in France. Now I know there has to be calculated transport and import taxes, but taking in account that a 20' container can hold about 80.000 of these cheese packages, I doubt that transport costs 4.640.000 Baht for a 20' container.

Price in that shop really go up and down.

For example, we like the Illy Espresso Coffee Beans (we drink that when we are out of Pads for the senseo thumbsup.gif )

Normally priced at 599 THB but the price went up to 799 THB and came back down again about a week later blink.png

799 Thb. You're not gone tell me that's for 250 gram do you.

Point is that it are not a few selected products, but the majority of the Casino brand products. So I assume it will be permanent.

Yes it's for 250 Grams, but we didn't buy it :)

Oke for the Casino brands it's the same, the Casino Brie (and probably for the Camembert as well) was 279 then 249 then 299 then back to 249 (no idea what it is now as I haven't been in a week)

Here we go again. A price goes up, someone is greedy. If the market will bear the price, then from a business perspective it's the right price. Why would they sell something for less than they can get?

If a lot of people like you stop buying this imported stuff because the price is too high they could lose money, so that's also not greedy because they will make less. They also don't need to base their price on their own costs just to give you the best deal they can. There's a lot of risk for these supermarkets to carry expensive lines of perishable items such as cheese, as they have limited shelf life. You should be thanking these shops for stocking items you crave for but don't need.

Successful or not, It's business strategy to make the most profit they can. Back at home you probably call this profit taking. Here people are calling it greed. If the exchange rate improves and they get it cheaper, one thing is for sure, they are not going to drop the price. Would you? If they managed to ship it over here at a lower cost, should they drop the price to reflect this? Of course not. Why should they? There's an emotional connection that foreigners have to all these imported goodies. They don't buy with their heads, but with their hearts.

Did you realize that Big C and Tesco have some kind of monopoly in Thailand ?

So if they triple the price tomorrow people will still buy it because they can't get it somewhere else. And isn't that what is the death of Thailand that the majority of businesses in Thailand are owned by a handful of people.

Take a look at that other western wholesaler, which has recently been acquired by the second richest man in Thailand, and watch how many of the quality products have disappeared from the assortment to make place for low quality high margin products.

And you think this is not about greed?

Are you staying that there is nowhere else that Thais can buy food other than BigC and Tesco. I would suggest that the majority of Thais have never been to either store. These comments make my wonder if you have ever been to anywhere outside Pattaya.
Also Thai inflation is supposed to reflect cost increases in what an average Thai buy. The idea that inflation figures are manipulated because they do not reflect price increases in herb cheese is stupid. What proportion of the salary of a typical Thai is spent on cheese with herbs in it. Thailand is not just about what happens in falang enclaves.

I have actually been to every corner of Thailand so far, and if you also had been you would know that Big C and Tesco are spread to in the smallest town in Thailand, so I doubt they cater to the foreigners overthere.

Did you bother to read the OP actually because I said it are the majority of Casino products that have increased with the same 15% overnight and at least 25% over the year, not only the herb cheese. Many of these products cater to a Thai public also, or do you think they eat only rice and som tam ?

We started buying the flora style margarine made here in Thailand as it was only 59 baht last year it is 72 baht in big c now ,so its not just imported stuff going up now it's not worth buying , also. How can best sell flora for 150 baht yet Tesco charge 172 baht if it's not profiteering?

I get most of my foreign luxury items at Friendship, Foodland and Villa Market.

I didn't realise this topic was specific to Tesco and Big C.

The market will find its price. Tripling a price overnight would probably be business suicide for that particular market. Imported items are normally luxury items and not considered essential items for most people, so people would stop buying those items if they consider the price is too high and the company selling them would stop importing them and they would no longer be available to customers.

Therefore tripling items overnight would not be greed. It would be stupidity.

If people will buy an item at triple its price, setting that price is business savvy, not greed. It also indicates that the item was too cheap to begin with. Do you think businesses are charity organisations? Controlling prices is a government's responsibility. Making maximum profit is the purpose of any business.

Let's say you were selling a house. Would you sell it cheap out of some sense of moral responsibility to the buyers, or would you get the best price you can? If you get the best price you can, shall I call you greedy?

Those 1970's eating habits perpetuated by the "cholesterol scare" die hard. That margarine is bad for your health. Maybe it's time to switch back to butter.

Sorry to be Mr Pedant, but that would be a duopoly; and only if their wasn't anywhere else to shop: Best, 7/11, Family Mart, Makro, Friendship, Central, Foodland, Tops, dozens of markets? Big supermarkets take advantage of their position but only if their customers let them. Customers being unable or too lazy to shop around is a winner for them. As for complaining about these outfits making profits: duh!!!. Good to see M&S are opening a branch in Patts in October. I hope they have food on sale; though I suspect from their location it may just be clothes. Still, nice to know there will be somewhere to get a decent pair of undercrackers.
