I get my passport back tomorrow via fed ex, already late at 3 day overstay !
Should I run for Cambodia, or just hang out and hide until my flight out on the 9th?

It would be better to go to immigration, pay the overstay and apply for a 7 day extension. The extension will cost 1900 baht.

He is already on a three day overstay.  If he goes to immigration on Monday and pays the overstay and then applies for a 7 day extension what will that accomplish?  Doesn't the extension start on the expiration day of the expired current permission to stay?  A request for a 7 day extension even with a ticket out won't get him to the 9th.  His overstay started on a immigration work day, not a weekend.  He will now be at immigration submitting an application for 7 days with no proof, ticket, of departure during the 7 days.

It seems that a "careful" border run is in order paying the overstay on exit and coming back on a visa exempt entry with ticket in hand is in order.  Just don't get caught by the BIB on overstay.

Hmm, did arrive in country on the 3rd of July . My departure dates and work location changed, and had to send passport away for visa in another country.
I kind of thought I could not apply for an extension once on overstay ?
I believe I tried to do this before, to pre-empt any problems, but did not have my passport in hand yet.
I would make a 3 or 4 day trip there, ( to Cambodia )so as to not make it seem like a border run?
Really don't want to fuck this up, as this is my chosen holiday and proposed retirement country.
And I do have ongoing interest located here.

The 7 days will start from the date of application.

If you go Monday you will pay for 3 days of overstay.

I've seen it reported on how the extension is applied here both ways:

1. From the date of application as stated by you.

2. From the date that the current permission to stay expired, which would be 1 August.

I have no intention of researching my vast amount of stored TV posts to backup my statements, but:

An extension to stay is just that, an extension of the current permission to stay which expired on 1 August.  Even though the "overstay" is paid for on Monday how can he get 7 days from Monday has he currently has nothing valid in his passport to extend? And overstay stamp in the passport is not and extension it is only proof the the fine has been paid.

I wish the OP good luck on Monday and hope that immigration agrees with your observation.

Because 7 days it is not an extension, it is time to given to you to get out of country when extension is denied?

So what you are saying is that if you overstay 78 days and go to immigration and pay 20k baht  and apply for an extension , they will deny it , give you a 7 day permission to stay stamp and let you go on your merry way!

Please tell, what will happen then? If you go clear your 78 day overstay at immigration and you show ticket out of country in 7 days, what they do?

I has been a while but I have seen reports of even longer overstays being handled that way.

They could arrest you, hold you in IDC until your flight out and if the ticket is not to your home country they might make you buy one.  I don't know, that's why I asked.
