Popular Post PoorSucker
Had a friend of mine that had a guest house there for 15 years. Some 4 years ago they found him in a rice paddy shot 3 times in the back of the head. Suicide apparently.

Tokay
Cambodia is changing VERY fast. Russians, Korans and Chinese are buying up pretty much everything they can and pouring money into the country. That said, it's still very third world. But if you enjoyed Thailand 20 years ago, Cambodia is probably a great place for you. At least for the next decade.

Pattaya46
The country seems to be changing fast. A lot of expats are coming in.... and some other are leaving.I know at least one of them: 75 yo who got a serious health problem. He is returning to USA because - according to him - "hospital care, even in Cambodia best hospital, is a joke !".The solution recommended to expats is to get on a plane to Singapore, but if you are to weak to fly... you're dead!

The solution recommended to expats is to get on a plane to Singapore, but if you are to weak to fly... you're dead! There will be a Bangkok Hospital opening in Phnom Penh soon. But you are right.... Other than that, the healthcare is not even adequate for emergency situations at times..... Much less adequate for a 75 year old with any chronic health conditions.

96tehtarp
In Thailand I feel relatively safe. I do not feel that way in Cambodia. Search in your favorite search engine for "Sihanoukville : USA Embassy Warning" Be careful over there.

mikebell
Phnom Penh is a dirty awful place. My wife was attacked by motorbike gold snatchers. Siam Reap is lovely with a fair degree of amenity. Only stayed on the beach at Sihanoukville so couldn't say what the town is like. Easy e-visa.
phuketrichard
i lived there in 2008-09 and returned to Thailand, travel back to Cambodia at least 2 x/year but no intention to every live there again. Even my Cambodian gf prefers it here ITS NOT LIKE THAILAND EVER WAS. few things going for it friendly people easy visa ( although things are changing) variety of cheap food ( but not the quality of Thailand) cheap drinks and cigs Very cheap accommodations against, very poor transport system, roads on many places very bad, medical poor, beggars /poverty everywhere and its in your face daily. corruption much worse than Thailand although accommodations are cheap not nearly as nice as here in Thailand an if ur looking for anything nice it will cost you more Only PP an sr airports for intentional travel and shv only for flying to sr so ur stuck on poorly maintained bus's There plenty of threads comparing the 2

catweazle
Perhaps it would help if you would define what exactly you would refer to as paradise... Cambodia, a place to live cheap? Yes it is - Cambodia, a place with a great future? No, definitely not. One swallow doesn't make a summer. Lax visa regulations won't make a paradise... bilago
Hey susususu, My suggest is to stay away if you are thinking to stay for a long time. This city is the worst of all Cambodia, maybe even of all Asia if we are talking corruption in the Police and Mafia. You dont know who is your friends and WHO is not, even if it is from your own homecaountry, doent trust anyone at all. I cannot share my story here but last time I was in that city I was happy when I departed from Phnom Penh and I will never come back. I was happy for Cambodia for a while but forget about it. Just to let you know, I did not any kind of crime at all, not even the shadow of one, I was the "good one". Take a look at Laos or South Vietnam or maybe even Myanmar. Cheers

mrfaroukh
I visited the capital few months ago. Except River side where beautiful area is made rest of the place was really backward. Lots of poverty, you can not find variety of food as you find in Thailand, they have started nice buses to different destinations, weather was too hot. A friend of mine also visited the same place thinking of starting a business, but changed his mind as he found it difficult to live there. It is too boring. The only positive thing I noticed was that the people were very gentle and polite. I also heard government has come with the law that if anyone fight with foreigner can be jailed for 15 years. True or not I do not know. Also the property prices has gone up 300% in few years. No doubt the country is changing but will we have enough time to enjoy the change or by then we are done???? Have not idea about visa. How to get long time etc. Good luck
rascalman
I am truly sorry for one older man! Popular Post ggt
Went to Cambodia's capitol to spend a couple of weeks exploring the possibility of moving from Thailand...after about a week...moved on to Vietnam...the place (Cambodia) is trashy everywhere...food was not very good...I did not find the people particularly friendly...they did not want their picture taken...and the same attitude of ripping off foreigners that exists in Thailand...is worse in Cambodia...left Cambodia for Viet Nam after a few days...that is all it took to realize it was not going to work for me... S. Vietnam was a treat...people friendly...did not matter that I am an American...food good...variety and price good...accommodations were excellent and inexpensive...girls were very cute and friendly...streets were clean...never felt threatened...walked around for many blocks in every direction with no one pestering me about a ride or spare change... Nha Trang...arguably one of the world's most beautiful beaches...was not crowded...had few vendors...and was a lovely place to visit...one could buy freshly cooked lobster and other seafood...right on the street corners...in the evening... at a reasonable price... Skip Cambodia...go on to Viet Nam...save yourself a few bucks...and time... Edited August 4, 2014 by ggt
bobthomas
Perhaps this thread a bit more than others of its kind- but people really seem to be divided on this issue of Cambodia. They seem to either hate it- or love it. To be fair. I think spending a resonable amount of time there is key. I know more than a few Farangs that live in Thailand and had gone to Cambodia just once for a few days and in the strangest set of circumstances- had just a horrible time. A whole other group of friends has been living in Cambodia for about 13 years straight and they never had even one major problem! I'm in the middle with about half that time in each- Thailand and Cambodia. In the 8 years I had my apartment in Phnom Penh (2001-2009) I walked every night from the Casino all the way to Martinis through the dark streets. Never once had a problem! People have said S-Ville is dangerous at night. So is Chicago and LA. Even Jomtien beach South of Chayapruek pre- 2003 would not have been my choice for an evening stroll. That said- ya can't beat the no frills Visa in Cambodia. Just apply it's yours. b Edited August 4, 2014 by bobthomas
