BANGKOK, 7 August 2014 (NNT) - According to a survey conducted by the Electronics Transaction Development Agency (ETDA), Thai people on average spend at least 7.2 hours per day or 50.4 hours per week surfing the web. The survey was conducted on a sample of 16,596 Internet users during April to May in 2014.

Internet usage has increased by 56 percent compared to last year. Based on that figure, Thais only spent 32.3 hours per week online in 2013. Most Thais used their smart phones as their primary device to access the Internet, closely followed by desktop computers, and notebook computers.

Regarding the most commonly used social media platform, Facebook topped the list at 93.7 percent, closely followed by Line at 86.2 percent, Google Plus at 34.5 percent, Instagram at 34 percent, and Twitter at 16.1 percent. However, all this time on the Internet can also draw unwanted attention on users.

Online behavior that are deemed risky among Internet users include posting status updates on Facebook about their physical location, refusing to change passwords constantly, and sharing photos in open groups.

BANGKOK: -- Thai people spend more than 50 hours a week on the Internet, chatting, catching up news , and searching for information, according to a recent survey conducted by the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA).

ETDA, an agency under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry, conducted the survey during April and May of 16,600 people on their Internet usage behaviour.

The survey revealed that Thais spend on average seven hours a day on the internet, almost a third of daily life.

This showed that the internet usage among Thais increased sharply to 50.4 hours a week this year, compared with 32.3 hours a week or 4.6 hours a day in 2013.

Online chatting, catching up on news and searching for information are the top three internet activities.

Transgender people spend a longer on the internet with an average of 62.1 hours per week, it said.

Greater availability of affordable mobile smartphones and wireless broadband internet coverage, free public WiFi are attributed as main factors that drove the surge in Internet usage.

The primary use of the mobile internet was for entertainment and communication purposes.

Users access the internet via desktop computers mainly to seek information while 38.8% of people surveyed use mobile phones for online shopping and 29.9% for mobile banking.

Something tells me the denominator in this equation was NOT the entire Thai population. More likely they mean "Thai people who have regular access to the Internet ..." And even then that seems high.

The highly social nature and group adhesion practices makes Thai and Thai culture a natural for social networking.  This is what they have being doing en mass for centuries and now have the best possible way to increase the practice.

You see, once they get to "work" they still need a snack, a potty break, and then some time for 57 selfies.

With perseverance, they can get to a full 8 hours...but would have to either get to work early or stay late.

Been to a mall lately? 10 "workers" could easily be replaced by 2, just doing their job.

Comforting to know that. I rent a room out and I seldom if ever get answers to my emails from letting agents. now that I come to think of it....I seldom get acknowledgements from anybody when I send them an email   (pet gripe of mine, so may I be excused).

Statistics must be calculated by the same genius who came up with the amount of time thais spend at school and doing homework which has them at school 14 hours a day or something rediculous and thailand spending more on education than any other country  etc, etc.  Top four subjects.  Ethics, English, Statistics and Dramatic Acting.
