No Visa options for the ones who are young and have money?

Recommended Posts

You can turn it around any way you want -- if online workers were wanted in Thailand there would be provisions in the visa, extension, and labor/work-permit provisions to accommodate them.

...

So you've turned track from trying to prove that they're not wanted as you could find absolutely no evidence to support your claim and are now saying that, they're not wanted because no official statement has been issued? It would certainly appear that you're the one turning things around anyway they want to support you're views, lets face it you're just arguing for the sake of arguing because your bored.

No one needs to prove they aren't wanted.
There is no visa for them is ALL the proof you need.
What is so difficult about that?

Jump up and down screaming " we're so important" all you want.
There is NO Visa.
You're flogging a dead horse unless the gov't announces something for on line workers.

Save your breath DB. All these Digital Nomads are urinating into the wind. They just don't and won't get it.

I suddenly remembered something:

Back in 2011, two big honchos from the Department of Labor and the Department of Immigration in Chiang Mai gave a radio interview.

Here is what they had to say:

He added that there is no “freelance” work permit, that one must be sponsored by a company. However, when asked about specialists offering advice for overseas clients in overseas markets, he felt that so long as they did not offer that advice to Thais or foreigners in Thailand that would be acceptable.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/473613-working-legally-in-thailand-immigration-and-labour-departments-speaks-out/

Makes good sense.

If the money is not made here then no need to worry about it.

I doubt you could find a single Thai in the entire country to do what one of my friends does online.. He's one of a handful of people worldwide with a certification that enables him a very high income lifestyle..

So yes, these people do do something many Thais cannot do, provide a global derived income without Thai clients or employers.. How many Thais live that way ??

So if there is only a handful worldwide then he most likely the only one in Thailand period. So proves nothing about all the others working here online.
Anyway this is so off topic, the topic was options for young and with money. Not i work or my friend works online.
To the OP you can get job, get married, Elite card or investment visa.

Always my friend. Also I doubt he is one of only a handful in the world. That would mean there is a school out there that only has certified a handful of people to do what he does. I dont believe that. Schools market and promote their programs to get students enrolled that's how they make money and if this very high qauilified person makes so much money schools would be telling students their potential wealth making capabilities and students would be lining up. I bet you have friends that used to be Navy seals, special ops, CIA etc. too.

What he does involves sports certification.. He's one of 2 westerners in Thailand I know with this qualification and one job this summer for 2 or 3 months will net him about 150k usd..

The point is, there is not a Thai who can do it.. Yet he won't get the specialized visa mentioned earlier. He doesn't need to.

He has options, including the elite card.. But a lot of what people spout is factually incorrect.

I think I've met one of these two guys in Hua Hin a while back. He flies around the world certifying stadiums for FIFA and the like.

I'm tired of these nomad hoodlums. It's about time they cracked down on these World Wild West layabouts and make them return to their home countries and get proper jobs. (bloody kids today)

If they were really 'nomads' they would be moving on all the time and wouldn't need to stay so long.

Indeed.

Anyone would think the Thais had a pikey caravan site on their doorstep.

Plenty of proper jobs in Thailand for younger westerners eg: teaching, diving instructors (anything that involves communicating in English correctly) because Thais don't do English.

Not everyone with money has money to gamble on an Elite Card that could be stripped from them the second the good General, soon to be PM, decides it's not good for the country.

Perhaps in 6 - 12 months everyone will see where he stands on things and all cards on the table. Until then, no way am I shelling out 500k on a card that can be cancelled at any time. Not in a country like this. Kudos to those of you who have money to burn or just enjoy the risk.

The thing is there are no "proper jobs" anymore, those are long gone or obsolete. Everything is being digitalized. For example in video editing, it required a professional video editing studio in the 80's with Betacam videos. Today almost everything can be done with a decent cam, laptop and  a website (vimeo.com). CAD used to require expensive computers but now any laptop can do the 3D modelling.

Dear old man who is completely out of touch with today's world... everything has changed. People can work anywhere in the world via a laptop or in some cases a tablet (not the kind you eat). Others simply have money from passive income streams and can travel the world and do as they please while money is deposited into their bank account.

Sounds like you're either out of touch or just a jealous old grump who is trapped in Thailand and living off a tiny government handout.

Either way, I'm looking forward to your 9th post, as I'm sure it will be a good one.  coffee1.gif

Not 100% sure, but my guess is both are Thai inventions.

Engineers with laptops, some even doing work at home. Just because you might have used a slide rule in the 1970's, does not mean you are somehow more capable than engineers today.

Even if you take all the jobs in that long process created, it is already less than jobs lost due to automation. Baby boomers hit the sweet spot in which new technology offered many more new jobs replacing the old obsolete jobs destroyed. Today, every corporate job in the US receives 250 applications on average and the employment participation rate is at record low.

So I guess one has to consider that maybe the lifestyle and business practices of someone being described as a 'digital nomad' is one that the Thai officialdom has deemed to one of little economic upside to Thailand and possibly one with a significant social downside such they feel no way compelled to offer visa/immigration inducements for such persons to remain long-term in Thailand.

Let's not pretend Thailand understands their are people who make money online, don't have bosses, or are location independent. They just don't.

If you've ever tried to explain to a Thai you have an online business you would know this.

Thai: "What is your job?"

Digital Nomad: "I have an online business"

Thai: "So where in Bangkok is your office"

DN: "I don't have office just work with laptop from apartment"

Thai: "Ah so you rent apartment to other farang, right"

DN: "No I don't rent apartment, nothing to do with apartment, work online with laptop from apartment or coffee shop or anywhere"

Thai: "How can farang work serving coffee in coffee shop?"

DN: "No I don't serve coffee in coffee shop"

Thai: "Ah so you own coffee shop"

No: "No. I have an internet business"

Thai: "Ah you fix computers...so where is your office and boss"

DN: "no,,,,,,,don't fix computer, don't need office and don't have boss...just me,"

Thai: "So your boss and office is in your home country then...how can they make sure you work?"

DN: "yes sure I fix computers and my boss is at home in the office....mai pen rai"

And it continues. Seriously.

does your home country make them welcome?

My country is a first world country where you can turn up and get benefits, a free house, education etc within weeks of landing. It's a desirable place for a lot of people from the 3rd world.

Thailand is a developing nation that offers none of that so it's a bit different.

My country also doesn't allow anyone over 55 with a small pension to live there yet Thailand does!

You can turn it around any way you want -- if online workers were wanted in Thailand there would be provisions in the visa, extension, and labor/work-permit provisions to accommodate them.

The Thai authorities would have to understand the concept first and seeing as all the young, internet using reasonably well educated Thai's, that I know can barely understand it I doubt any of those in power do.

...

"Proper jobs". Now that is funny.

If teaching unruly, spoiled kids, English who don't care about learning in a Thai school for 35,000B per month counts as a proper job you can count me out!

And anyway there aren't "plenty" of proper jobs in Thailand for young Westerners. You were barely able to name 2 yourself.

There's a load of 'teaching' jobs and not much else. Can't be more than a handful of dive instructors. What else can they legally do?

And if they have an online business why would they want to do one of these 'proper' jobs?

Just another chauvinist rant by a westerner who considers southeast asians to be beneath him..News for ya pal, I have worked with thai engineers who were every bit as good as any westerners i worked with. Their qualifications, education and abilities were a match for the rest of us. and check the graduate schools of any western engineering school and you will find plenty of them.

That's the most stupid and demeaning piece I've read here, have you ever visited Thailand before, apart from Pattaya and lower Sukhumvit I mean!

Well I've got news for you mate.

It's true.

I've had these sorts of conversation with about half a dozen Thai's all either university students or graduates.

And I'm not the only one. Plenty of guys I know have had similar.

I'll tell you 2 places I don't frequent in Thailand and it's Pattaya or Lower Sukhumvit. Both shit holes with little of interest.

I don't consider anyone beneath me.

I know and respect plenty of Thais, Cambodians and Burmese. The Burmese and Cambodian guys have barely had a days education in their lives. Great guys.

These fact is sort of conversations happen with seemingly well educated Thai people.

You wouldn't know as you would never have to talk about that sort of thing.
