You might try posting in the general forum as well where you are more likely to attract the attention of someone who is familiar with export laws in general.

I'm going to make a guess here...this is only a guess. If you got this in Canada then the statue is probably not of any historic or cultural significance because the fine arts people are supposed to certify Buddha images for export and not allow export of those that are of historic or cultural importance. A tag from them then would mean that this image is certified to be of little importance...I think. Not that it isn't a fine item to have and use in your devotion...but just that it's probably not so ancient etc. etc.

Can you post any pic, that would help to determine the status of the object. I agree with chownah that this object is more likely to be one of those decorations and is not used for worship. Also the price will tell how significance it is. The tag from the Fine Arts Dept might just to certify the correct posture of the Buddha and nothing else.

I looked here:

http://www.thai-la.net/etc/buddha.htm

and found this:

1. Buddha images, Bodhisattva images or related fragments, part of ancient monuments and prehistoric objects are forbidden to be taken out of the Kingdom. Newly cast Buddha images in complete condition can be exported for worship, cultural exchange or educational purposes with licenses issued by the Fine Arts Department. Not more than 5 pieces shall be allowed. (more information contact 0 2628 5032)

2. Reproduction of antiquities can also be exported with licenses.

Check it out.
