webfact
Bagged rice prices expected to increase by 5-10 baht per pack BANGKOK, 11 August 2014 (NNT) - The prices of five-kilogram bags of rice will be pegged at between 80-130 baht per pack until the end of November, in line with the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s policy to help reduce the cost of living. However, their prices are expected to increase after that period. According to Somkiat Makayathorn, President of the Thai Rice Packers Association, the prices of bagged rice weighing five kilograms could increase by 5-10 baht per pack after November. He stated that the new lot of rice to be distributed to the market could fall short of demand and the production output for off-season rice has declined in general, which could cause rice prices to increase. Nonetheless, the prices of Jasmine rice are expected to decrease due to a large production output. Besides, Thai Jasmine rice prices remain relatively higher than those of other countries, which would lead to lower exports. For this reason, prices of Jasmine are set to drop slightly, indicated the Association President. [nnt]2014-08-11[/nnt]

If only I could understand what you are saying here I might be able to relate it to the topic. Of course you might be referring to the 500 or 700++ billions the Yingluck government lost the Nation with their RPPS, but even that would be off topic. Puzzling really, what the heck could you have meant with your post
HiSoLowSoNoSo
If they were sincere of helping the poor they could give some of the stockpiled rice that is now starting to rot to the poor people for free. Trying to get a max price for it through actions (that did not work out as they planed last week) and paying for expensive storage of it will end in more losses.

If they try to export the rice some of it most be OK for human consumption and all poor Thais are not rice farmers.

So he is saying Thailand doesn't has enough rice on stock? Might it be that the rice on stock, mostly from previous years is not of the right kind and maybe (only maybe of course) not the right quality? Mind you, I'm sure no real Thai would have a problem doing their patriotic duty and eat rice stockpiled by the previous government(, and paid for with their taxes).

It's been a long long time since I;ve seen any 5kg bags of rice for 80 Baht! Even the cheapest broken white rice is between 100 and 120. The jasmine rice I usually buy is normally just under 200 Baht, does that mean that the next time I buy it,it will be 130 Baht? Sticky rice, the staple in Isaan is at least 160 Baht
Emster23
"new lot of rice to be distributed to the market could fall short of demand" Just package up the old stuff and sell as new. Seems no problem leaning on food vendors at supermarkets to lower food prices.... how about leaning on rice barons to do the same? This hits less well off far more than food stalls I would guess. Could it be size matters?

Like a number of the previous posters, I am confused by the logic of the reason for an anticipated rise in the cost of rice (other than Jasmine rice) for Thai consumers. We have all been led to believe that there is a vast amount of stockpiled rice which no-one outside Thailand wants to buy. The quality of this stockpile is likely to be continually degrading, and its size disappearing due to theft. If it cannot be exported at the present asking price, surely either the export price should be reduced to a level which will be purchased outside Thailand or the product should be released for sale in Thailand at a price which is at least equivalent to the maximum price which could currently be realistically achieved by exporting it. The point at issue is that, if that price is lower than the actual current prices, someone is 'making a killing' at the expense of Thai consumers. Indeed things do not seem to match up with the NCPO rice audit that found only 0.018% of rice missing from the 1,787 graneries and 7.05% of rice having unspecified "flaws." This would hardly be the cause for any shortages.
freedom4life
If I were the Thai people, an instant rejection to this hike. I wouldn't trust any form of gov't and as one can see, it is already starting. Once they see that they can raise the price of rice without much protest, they will do it again and increase the prices of other commodities

Once they see that they can raise the price of rice without much protest, they will do it again and increase the prices of other commodities The previous government suggested price rises and inflation was just imagination. So it didn't start now, but a few years ago. Also you should be more open to market mechanisms and not let the government put in it's heavy hand to try to control market prices. The government mostly effects prices by setting tax, import tax, VAT. The possibility of import taxes is diminishing, taxes on 'sinful' products is leading to lower tax income. So, I guess soon VAT will rise, just like in other democratic countries in the West.
