It is hilarious that so many people believe that Thais can not speak English because of the teacher. In our western countries we would blame the students. Why has this perception changed? Thais can not speak english because they dont want to learn or try in school. Their parents are fine with this. It is very easy to get a B in an english class and not be able to speak 2 sentences. Cheating and grade fixing is rewarded in this country.

Oh, how quickly you forget:

The “associate students”, who generally have lower average grades than a typical Oxford undergraduate, pay as much as £13,000 a term and can stay for up to a year.

Senior figures said they “pose severe reputational risk” because their academic standards are “often low”.

The report said that colleges, which are independent of the university and are free to set their own admissions policies, granted them admission for “purely commercial” reasons. The inquiry, prompted by concerns about the number of associate students and their links with Oxford, was held by a working group chaired by Prof Paul Slack, a former pro-vice-chancellor at Oxford.

Its findings were published two weeks after universities were accused of using foreign students as “cash cows” by charging them as much as £35,000 a year for a degree. British students are currently charged a maximum of £9,000.

And from The Daily Mail:

The extraordinary scandal over the doctored A-level grades has finally exposed the appalling corruption at the heart of our education system, a rot that goes all the way to the top.

The chief executive of the Oxford, Cambridge and RSA (OCR) exam board, Dr Ron McLone, has been required to explain to the government's exam watchdog, the Qualification and Curriculum Authority, why he personally tampered with many A-level marks to lower the grades his board was awarding.

But the QCA already knows the answer. For McLone had told them exactly what he was doing. Indeed, astounding as it may seem, McLone, the QCA and the other exam boards had actually agreed that the highest achievers would be marked down.

What McLone did - admitted in a leaked letter to a school -- was so shocking it beggars belief. He discovered that his board's top A-level grades were in danger of going through the roof when this year's exam results were combined with last year's AS level grades to construct the final A-level score.

Wake up and smell the coffee Nobleman1.  The above is just the tip of the iceberg and everyone knows it.  How many virtual idiots graduate with honors because daddy is a major contributor?

Thailand?  Same same, but different.

I once had the pleasure of working for a Thai graduate of Oxford University. He could barely string two sentences together or comprehend basic business English. I still wonder if his degree was fake.

Junkets need to take place before that season's budget allocation expires as it's usually revoked if not used.

Meanwhile camera right there are 128 farangs wearing clothes they have had on all week, looking confused and  wondering where the bar in that place is..

126 teachers! How to waste money, Thai style.

its not that bad, you can fest assured they are not in brunei for the food and the booze.

I didn't know Thai English teachers can speak Brunei language....

Hmmmm, strange they didn't take them to Oxford or Cambridge in England, the home of the correct language..........coffee1.gif

Maybe they'll do so, if your country becomes an ASEAN member country. facepalm.gif

all that money waisted to come to the conclusiong that the thai teachers needed a translater thaiglish to english, so they could be understood

Thailand views English as critical to the success of its AEC plan and was the first ASEAN member to present a comprehensive action plan for meeting its targets by the 2015 deadline.

You need to start by hiring native speaking english teachers only.whistling.gif BTW wasting money on paid junkets as such are not only a waste but a crime.wink.png

Yeah, right! Surely, 3 researchers would accomplish more in a month than these 126 teachers in a week whistling.gif

The problem with these junkets is that the Thai teachers will view it and discuss it among themselves.   They will listen politely and not question anything.  They will not do much of a comparison and probably won't learn much.

I visited a very well run program with a group of our teachers.   Rather than asking questions and trying to get their head inside what and how the school operated, they dismissed much of what they saw.   They did however, comment about how nice the grounds looked and that the lunch was good.

Another problem with these junkets is that they are a façade for having a group holiday.

Our entire department of 30 Thais who teach English, took our students' university tuition money and went to France for 10 days a few years ago. France?

After hitting all the tourist sites and spending about 5 million baht of public money, we were short of funds for paper, whiteboard markers, and photocopy supplies for the entire semester. The unabashed excuse from the department secretary was, "Sorry, the money was spent on the teacher trip!"

Side note: None of the eight foreign teachers were allowed to join the trip. My guess is that the Thais are a little touchy about the actual character of these "seminar" trips.

Shopping, eating, sightseeing, photo (group) (individual), repeat ad nausium. It's very like the trips to Singapore and NZ and OZ nothing learnt, nothing passed on, photos photos photos photos lunch!  facepalm.gif wai.gif coffee1.gif

You forgot the most important photos to "update" their facebook pages. Must be an Asian thing, but most of them post the food they had. Even if it's a nasty looking meal.

I wonder why they went to Brunei.   It's really not a big tourist destination.   I haven't been there, but people that I know who have been there were not impressed.

They are probably using the budget allocation given for preparation for AEC 2015.

"Next year, we will be coming into the AEC and we want to visit all ASEAN members by then,"

If the budget isn't used it will be taken away. I agree Brunei is not impressive, however it does make for a nice junket.
