PATHUM THANI: -- O-Negative blood is urgently needed for the survivors from Monday’s building collapse north of Bangkok in which three workers have been confirmed killed and 24 injured.

Potential donors with the rare blood type are encouraged to make the donation directly at Thammasat University Hospital where the two survivors were admitted to, according to Prapasiri Sajjacholapoan, governor of Pathum Thani’s Red Cross chapter.

Trying to contact this hospital is a complete nightmare even for Thai speakers.

Given up after numerous attempts. Their automated call answering system is a disgrace.

One year ago my friend and I went to the Thai Red Cross and tried to donate blood. When they learned we were from the US they told us they could not take our blood as we were too old!

I'm 67 and my friend was 50. We never were asked what age we were.

Perhaps they know something we should know.

Very strange indeed.

The Thai Red Cross does not accept NEW blood donors over the age of 55. That's what I learned a few years ago. I'm still surprised they don't make this clear in their request for blood. I have no problem waiting in line to donate blood to a person in need, but waiting for hours just to me met by "you are too old" is not very helpful.

For anyone around the area from Kon Kaen to Nong Kai, Sakhon Nakhon, Udon etc..If you are O-, I'd like to hear from you.

Seeing that blood group 0-  is only 0.3 of the Thai population, and we are all susceptible to a life threatening event, we really have to provide for each other as no other blood group can help. 0- is the only blood group that is non acceptable of other types for blood transfers. Bangkok is a long way away.

The idea Is that we have a contact register available to all registers and families that  will be called in the event of any emergency..If 5 litres of blood is needed then 10 people front up..easy as that. 5 litres is a pretty extreme need. Most likely always less than that.

I remember being dragged out of bed in barracks at Enoggera while in the army in Oz for "voluntary"  donations for 0-. Never bothered me a bit.

I've only been on the case for a week. 3 of us so far..7% of Caucasians have 0-.. There's sweet FA in the hospitals here.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks.

With only .3% of Thais having O neg blood I would want to know that at least one person in this building collapse is O neg.

As it is a universal donor it does make things easy.I would hope all O neg is saved for those people who are O neg. I am A +

and have given blood dozens of times in my youth, but am now 55 and on blood pressure meds I am no longer able to. Best of

luck to the accident victims. To everyone considering blood donations please do it. Rare blood is rarely needed, so if you have

a more common blood type don't think it is not needed. With all the vehicle accidents here it must be tough for Thai blood

supply services to keep blood bank levels up.
