Department of Internal Trade enjoins provincial trade offices to check on overpriced meals

BANGKOK, 14 August 2014 (NNT) - The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) is enjoining its provincial trade offices to check meal prices after several complaints were received recently.

Santichai Saratawanpat, the deputy director-general of DIT, revealed that the provincial trade offices and provincial commercial offices have been supervised to examine the cost of ingredients, other expenses and rental fees to see if they reflect the price of meals.

The food stall owners are urged to take a profit of not more than 30%.

Those who sell overpriced meals will be fined a maximum of 140,000 baht or sentenced to seven years in jail under Section 29 of the law on product and service pricing.

If the case is in line with a charge of fraud, it will entail a maximum fine of 6,000 baht or a sentence of three years in jail.

You need a new lawyer.  The penalty for murder is death or 15/20 years imprisonment.

Does he? Tried and sentenced already? Apparently he's playing the slots in Poipet. 555

Think this should be left up to the individual, supply and demand,

if the food is over priced or of not good quality, the suppler will not

be able to sell,no need for laws, but lots of other things that need

to be taken more seriously and with those kinds of penalties and

fines.

He used the word faces - as in if found guilty.

And I expect "zero", repeat zero food vendors have been charged with overpricing meals.   Maybe they should instead just file charges against customers who are dumb enough to pay high prices.

How much does it cost to make a Papaya salad these days? And roughly selling for? Sorry, need to work my percentages out to make sure I'm not being overcharged!
Nah.... They just need a good accountant!

What you expect. It is real american coffee at real american prices w00t.gif

Pity the coffee is pretty poor, the local company  P & F when they still had their cafe at Phaya Thai, made me entirely forget about starbucks.  They offloaded their cafe business to operators that seem to think opening at 10am and closing 11pm is what people want from a coffee shop.  Coffee still great and cheap though..... pity days almost over before they open,.forced back to starbucks

eek.... ranted a bit there sorry.

My local store up the price of fried egg from 5 baht to 7 baht. That is a discussing 40%. Where do I report the greedy owner?
What on earth sparks a witch hunt like this.

Go and order a Pad Krapow in the oriental and see what it costs.

I take your point, Worgeordie, but I think you put too much faith in the free market. The tourist, for example will get hit the one time while those who live here will learn to shun the over chargers. So, in order to not chase off the tourists, it would be wise to have gov't intervention. Same idea with health regulations, I don't go back if I get Iill but would rather know that there is some regulation. I know enforcement is problematic but would rather have at least an attempt at control. If everyone was good....but that is not reality.

DIT tightens inspections of food prices at restaurants in tourist spots

BANGKOK, 15 August 2014 (NNT) - The Department of Internal Trade (DIT), Ministry of Commerce, has stepped up inspection of food prices at restaurants and food shops in tourist spots.

Restaurant owners who are found guilty of overcharging their customers or involved in setting unfair prices on their food items will be held accountable by the law.

Deputy Director-General Santichai Santhawanpaet revealed that the DIT is set to seriously tackle this problem in the Hua-Hin beach area following numerous complaints made by consumers.

The DIT would conduct strict inspections on the restaurants’ capital costs including prices of raw materials, utility costs, and other related expenses. According to the official, restaurants are not allowed to make profits exceeding 30 percent of the food price in order to ensure fair pricing.

Violators are subjected to a seven-year jail term and a fine of up to 140,000 baht, or both.

The DIT deputy director-general said the provincial committee on goods prices and service is also empowered to impose price controls on all food items to ensure that customers are being treated fairly.

I don't get this. A vendor has the right to set his prices and the customer has the right to accept the price or eat somewhere else, nobody forces people to go into these places and pay do they? This is rubbish.

What's going on? Why can't they sell their food at the price they want? And what about all the hi-so restaurants, does it apply to them, too?

Western mindset

A move to help tourists both home grown and foreign from being ripped off, and everyone here comes off arch capitalist bullsh*t. What is wrong with you people?

Think this should be left up to the individual, supply and demand,

be able to sell,no need for laws, but lots of other things that need

to be taken more seriously and with those kinds of penalties and

Order a bowl of noodles and a Chang, and get presented with a bill for 7,000 baht by a guy with a baseball bat, and see if you may feel differently.

And when you look for the menu that you ordered from (at 50 baht for the noodles and 50- baht for the Chang), you get a different menu quoting the noodles at 5,000 and the Chang at 2,000.  (Yeah, that's an exaggeration, but you get the drift of it)

Problem with tourists areas is that there's a constant supply of tourists who haven't been scammed yet, and after they do get wise there will be fresh meat next week.  Supply and demand doesn't work- and laws may be needed to address festering problems.

And exactly which agency in Thailand sets food prices? I think the only places I ever get charged the same price every time is by McDonald's and KFC If I think I have been gouged on price I just don't go back. Menu prices in restaurants I have eaten at are non existent What a waste of time on a useless pursuit that will just fade away sooner than later
