Hey all,

I'm going to Thailand soon to live there with my wife and kids. I have a question about the Visa thing to those who have experience with this.

Is it possible for me to go to Thailand with a Tourist Visa and when in Thailand gain a Marriage Visa, or do I need to get a Marriage visa in my homecountry first to be able to extend it in Thailand?

I'm asking this because my homecountry wants me to find a 'translation of marriage certificate by a certified translator' which costs a load of money which I would love to spend on other things instead.

The Thai embassy will accept your marriage certificate in Thai. Or did you get married in your home country and they want it translated to Thai.

It would be best to get a single entry non-o based upon marriage before traveling.

You could do a change of visa  status from a tourist visa entry to a 90 day non immigrant visa entry but this can only be done in Bangkok. Unless you live are going to living in or near Bangkok this is not a good option because it would probably mean two trips to get the visa entry done. You would need to show 400k baht in a a That bank in your name only or have proof of 40K baht income. Plus all the documetnes required to do the extension of stay based upon marriage.

Heyy Ubonjoe, thanks for reacting.

Sadly in my country the Embassy doesn't do Visas, only the Consulate does and they ask a certified translation, perhaps that is because they're not Thai. We got married in Turkey but we got it legalized in Thailand already and also have a Thai Marriage Certificate.

Can't the Udon Thani Immigration Office do this 'Visa status change' too?

Going twice to Bangkok is better than paying the translation though, we could combine it with other things. Where should we go in Bangkok, to the Foreign Ministry?

I have all the necesarry money and documents to show in Thailand so this luckely isn't the issue.

Is you wife in Thailand. You have two copies of marriage certificate. Get one translated in Thailand and sent over to you!

Hey casualbiker,

She is, but I don't think they recognize any Thai translation bureau as a certified translator. I found even in Thailand it's hard to get the Government instances accept translations not made by the Government themselves.

Well I just had my affirmation to marry done at a translation service recognised by the UK embassy and certified at Changwattana. I actually find it EXTREMELY weird that a Thai consul not accepting a Thai marriage certificate!

I will pm the translation service details!

Do you need it in English or what language?

Only Bangkok can do the change of visa status based upon marriage. Udon does not do any conversions or change of visa status's to non immigrant visas.

If you are going to be in Udon you should just make a trip to Vientiane for the visa.
