Thailand Detains Russian Citizen at Interpol’s Request

BANGKOK, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian citizen, accused of being part of a large criminal organization in Russia during the 1990s and 2000s, has been detained in the Thai coastal city of Pattaya, where he had been hiding for four years, a representative of the Russian Embassy in Thailand told RIA Novosti on Monday.

"Russian citizen Mark Yakovlevich Lunev, born in 1974, who has been on an international wanted list since 2010 on the accusation of active participation in the activity of a Novosibirsk gang known under the name of Trunov Gang, was detained by Thai police on August 13 in the resort town of Pattaya at the request of Interpol," Vladimir Sosnov, the consular head of the Russian Embassy in Thailand, said.

Lunev is facing charges for participating in a criminal gang and blackmail.

The Trunov Gang was one of Russia's largest criminal organizations, responsible for multiple crimes, including murders, banditry, possession and trade of illegal weapons and explosives, and other crimes between the late 1980s and 2000s. The gang was broken up in 2009 and its leaders sentenced to long prison terms. Some of its members also fled abroad.

Lunev was living in Thailand with his family and was considered an honest businessman in Pattaya, where he also joined a charity.

Thai authorities are considering deporting Lunev to Russia.

Thai authorities are considering deporting Lunev to Russia.

Why only "considering"?

Considering , to deport , sounds as good as giving politicians the option to declare their assets.

There are many more Russians hiding fromthenlaw back home here in Thailand..find them and back they go..please!

Good riddance! coffee1.gif

They could instigate a similar system that the US border control use which is called ESTA.

It would need a lot of co-operation from other countries & the airlines though

Wonder what business's he was running around here? no pictures of him on Google he has done a good job of keeping a low profile

Considering is proper, I believe. Requests from Interpol are not instantly granted as far as I know from experience.

I prefer to take a deep breath and realize I don't know all the details. I'm not an expert on Interpol, international law or the agreements between The Russian Federation and The Kingdom of Thailand.

Being involved in Blackmail and member of a Criminal gang can be a 'Rusky' business

An elite card visa only costs 500k for 5 years. Of course he could afford that with all the russian mafia money he brought with him.

He was probably considered as a wealthy businessman , so Thai immigration would give him VIP service.

Does an Elite Card give you immunity? Might be worth it... after all.
