I think restricting sales of alcohol to certain hours in the day is a good thing, the hours are not unduly onerous and it does provide for some amount of control and enforced self restraint. Anyway, there's loads of small places in the markets where alcohol can be purchased at any time of day, for those who truly can't wait.

I think this law is an as$.

Folk sometimes want to buy alcohol when they're out shopping to drink later, not make a special journey at legal times.

In my case it lead to drinking more. I live quite remote & local shops only sell the standard chang etc. I'm also never out & about shopping during the legal times. Result = buying by the case(s) at Makro. The problem with that is that it's too easy to stick another couple of beers in the fridge as your last glass is filled. So I ended up drinking too much.

Now I've found a mom and pop shop that I pass on the way home in the afternoon, that sells my preferred beer, so I can pick up a couple of cans every day & ration myself.

Never got to the stage of creating a scene in a supermarket though w00t.gif

"early thirty year old blond Brit female"

Not surprized, they think the world owes them something.

Similar behaviour, when they come to Greece.

Except, if she comes from Essex.

Then she is excused.

My daughter-in-law is an early thirties blonde Brit female from Essex.

Does not drink except occasional glass of wine with a meal.

Is a Chartered Accountant and mother or two well behaved children.

Next stereotype please.....

A loverly song by Ian Dury......

Good evening, I'm from Essex

In case you couldn't tell

My given name is Dickie

I come from Billericay and I'm doing very well

Geez, please tell me you cut and pasted that.

No, I typed it from memory. My boys & I listen to it everyday on the school run laugh.png

Sounds like Thailand adopted the old British licensing laws that were implemented during WWI and not changed until sometimes in the late 1980s. I think that the legal times were 1200-1440 and 1830 -2130. I'm American and the licensing laws differ from state to state and even to the city level in some States. Some areas of the US are still "dry".

It's only in fairly recent years, 2008 I think, that Thailand adopted restricted hours, previously you could buy alcohol at any time.

thaksin govt implemented this law, around the 2004 mark

Actually the new laws went into effect on 1 January 2006, two years after I sold my bar! Antiquated BS and they are only observed by large establishments not Ma and Pa stores or small restaurants.

We can agree to disagree on this. Actually, now that I've thought about it, it's not so much that I think it's a good thing as I don't believe it's a bad thing, if that makes sense.

There are other ways to limit alcohol consumption among young people at certain hours. Everybody here carries ID for proof of age. Bars & restaurants can have their sale of alcohol times limited if that is what the powers that be desire, and drinking in public areas can be outlawed (maybe it is, I don't know). Supermarkets sell alcohol. People shop at all times of the day, but have to time their visits if they want to buy some alcohol to drink later.

I don't know what the best answer is - but here's a document that describes what the law is at present, note the maximum penalties and some of the locations such as petrol stations and parks:

as u have posted there are other alternative avenues, where one can get a drink etc etc

so why have a absoulately dumb law in the first place,

have seen many hissy fits in my world travels (and have done it myself)your o/p is just a storm in a tea cup,in fact I.MO. very boring to say the least

It's only an "absolutely dumb law" if your an alcoholic, otherwise plan around the times given and respect the local laws.

The man who requested this law lives on a hill and his name can't be mentioned, nobody will be arguing against it , period. End of story.

But only wholesale amounts, 10 litres or whatever it is.

It was put in place to stop young kids being able to get their hands on it.

Dumb or not, it's here to stay. Get over it, hahaha...You know the song..

You are a dead bore!......

As for Ibiza, the Spanish police are cracking down hard there. It's a riot. They have a real problem. Worst are those from the UK (so as not to use the word Brit which seems to upset some) and I think it was the Germans. Leaves the French out of it for once.

The worst are the bigot-beetles that point out groups and spread gossip in lieu of a link to such a story.

The cause a nuisance by "boring" their way into social media groups.

It certainly is a dumb law, designed to stop children from buying alcohol!!! As others have pointed out an ID card should do the trick if they look under age. The UK had a similar law to uphold the Defence of the Realm shortly after WW1 and this pretty much stayed in place with restricted licensing laws until the 1980's..so the Thai powers that be don't hold the monopoly on Stupidity.

I suspect strongly that there are many many thousand sex tourists who might disagree.

What the hell! Better than Prohibition. I can't figure out the logic of the hours, either. Maybe the Ministry of Health does not want individual drunks (who can not afford to buy or carry 10 ltr comfortably) to collapse on the pavement in the hot afternoon sun. wink.png

<snip>

What I dislike about these posts (and I do believe the OP's story) is that there is almost no chance of any accurate follow-up. We will most likely never know what happened to this person.

Still, this is just a message board and not a news service. The OP's post is fine with me.

Dateline Chiangmai, Aug 19, 2014.

A young blond female with a British accent was taken into custody by two off-duty detectives. She was agitated and screaming obscenities as she was hauled into Central Chiangmai police station.

During a routine search, it was discovered she was a he, not blond and not British. The arrestee was a dark-haired albino from Sri Lanka. This was immediately reported back to TVF so that the hitherto somnambulant anti-albino TV contingent could jump into action and use the occasion to condemn all albinos for being foul-mouthed, cross-dressing, misbehaving drunks.

Carry on, guys.

The shops selling alcohol within the restricted hours are breaking the law. Your argument against the law is akin to saying that there will always be drunk drivers so why bother with a law.

The dumb law was to try and keep booze out of the schools. I don't think it works, but they'll never know because the mom and pop places are rarely busted.

Thailand, home of enforced laws, sometimes, occasionally, maybe, mai pen rai..... Well only if it's big businesses, partially foreign owned.....
