webfact Posted August 21, 2014 Author Share Posted August 21, 2014 Gen Prayuth elected 29th Thai PMBy Digital Content BANGKOK, Aug 21 -- National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) leader and army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha was on Thursday unanimously elected Thailand’s 29th prime minister by members of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), three months after he led the military takeover that toppled an elected government.A total of 191 NLA members voted for Gen Prayuth to become interim prime minister while three others including the Assembly president and two vice presidents abstained from voting.The NLA has a total of 197 members, and three members took sick leave today.As expected, there was no other candidate contesting the provisional premiership post.NLA members were required to cast their ballots by roll call and Gen Prayuth needed only 99 votes, or half of the total NLA membership, to become the 29th prime minister since Thailand moved from being an absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy in 1932.NLA President Pornphetch Wichitcholchai will forward Gen Prayuth's name for royal endorsement.Gen Prayuth was absent during the voting as he attended a function marking the 64th anniversary of the founding of the 21st Infantry Regiment in Chon Buri province, near Bangkok.Surrounded by a throng of local and foreign journalists, Gen Prayuth only smiled at the media saying “Let the country move forward first” when asked whether there was any attempt earlier for him to accept the post. At least we can see he has had a pretty good stab at things before he becomes PM, unlike the rest of the failures and money grabbers who have ever held the post. But as always happens with every dictatorship in history the real agenda will be revealed - a restricted press, no elections, blatant corruption, disgusting nepotism, an upsurge in nationalism fueled with hatred it is all on its way and it is only a matter of time. Gen Prayuth received 191 votes from the 197- member NLA. Three members abstained from the vote.The meeting was presided over by NLA Speaker Pornpetchara Vichitcholachai.NLA member Tuang Antachai proposed Gen Prayuth to the NLA for nomination.His proposal received 188 members to support, more than the required 99 members stipulated by the provisional constitution.The Speaker then told NLA members to exercise their votes with regard to national interest and later called each member to verbally vote yes or no or abstain.A total of 194 members attended the meeting today.191 members voted yes with three abstained. However, she was not made party leader and she did not join the executive board of the party. The ultimate decision was made by Thaksin. "Some said she is my nominee. That's not true. But it can be said that Yingluck is my clone... Another important thing is that Ms Yingluck is my sister and she can make decisions for me. monk213 Posted August 21, 2014 Share Posted August 21, 2014 One thing is for sure, he has a lot of expectations to live up to, he is putting himself into a situation of ever increasing power and many people are turning to him to clear up this mess, if that is even possible. IMO he is taking a huge risk and isn't much different from other egotistic people before him, just watch. Yes he has not done some of things that others have but he has put himself in power for the time being with no other alternative, he doesn't even have the credentials as a politician. Things can only get better and we should positively look forwards to new elections next year without the participation of the corrupt dinosaurs and their brethren from both sides of the political divide. ASEAN together with new elections will transform Thailand.... In the fullness of time. I hope you're right...but it's not like this is the first time we've had a military coup, I 'think' all of the current players were around during the last 'cleanup' and like it or not were the one's who wrote the last constitution that is often touted as flawed. How many practice runs do they need to get it right?
