18 coups and 29 prime ministers.

Follows is a list of Thailand's peer group of nations with governments following coups (Thailand leads the pack in terms of numbers of coups)

18? Phfft... Thailand is just a novice

What country had the most coups d'etat ever?

Bolivia has had 193 coups since independence from Spain in 1825.

Gen Prayuth elected 29th Thai PM

BANGKOK, Aug 21 -- National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) leader and army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha was on Thursday unanimously elected Thailand’s 29th prime minister by members of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), three months after he led the military takeover that toppled an elected government.

A total of 191 NLA members voted for Gen Prayuth to become interim prime minister while three others including the Assembly president and two vice presidents abstained from voting.

The NLA has a total of 197 members, and three members took sick leave today.

As expected, there was no other candidate contesting the provisional premiership post.

NLA members were required to cast their ballots by roll call and Gen Prayuth needed only 99 votes, or half of the total NLA membership, to become the 29th prime minister since Thailand moved from being an absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy in 1932.

NLA President Pornphetch Wichitcholchai will forward Gen Prayuth's name for royal endorsement.

Gen Prayuth was absent during the voting as he attended a function marking the 64th anniversary of the founding of the 21st Infantry Regiment in Chon Buri province, near Bangkok.

Surrounded by a throng of local and foreign journalists, Gen Prayuth only smiled at the media saying “Let the country move forward first” when asked whether there was any attempt earlier for him to accept the post. He will retire from the army commander-in-chief post due to reaching the compulsory retirement age of 60 at the end of September,

“There was no approach from anybody,” said Gen Prayuth before stepping into a car to go to the 21st Infantry Regiment Headquarters where he was to inspect its activities. (MCOT online news)

It always starts out so nicely, dictators getting shit done and not taking anymore shit from criminals.

But as always happens with every dictatorship in history the real agenda will be revealed - a restricted press, no elections, blatant corruption, disgusting nepotism, an upsurge in nationalism fueled with hatred it is all on its way and it is only a matter of time. People would be begging for the likes of the Shinawatras and Abhisits back in charge if the army were given control of Thailand for the next 10 years.

starts out so nicely...a bit like your team..thumbsup.gif but hey you did win that coveted community shield last week...im green with envy...

Prayuth named 29th PM

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly voted unanimously to nominate military junta chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha to become the country's 29th prime minister. Gen Prayuth received 191 votes from the 197- member NLA. Three members abstained from the vote.

The meeting was presided over by NLA Speaker Pornpetchara Vichitcholachai.

NLA member Tuang Antachai proposed Gen Prayuth to the NLA for nomination.
His proposal received 188 members to support, more than the required 99 members stipulated by the provisional constitution.

The Speaker then told NLA members to exercise their votes with regard to national interest and later called each member to verbally vote yes or no or abstain.

A total of 194 members attended the meeting today.

191 members voted yes with three abstained. The three are the speaker and his two deputies.

The NLA speaker will forward the nomination of Gen Prayuth to His Majesty the King for royal endorsement today.

Gen Prayuth was not in Parliament but was in Chonburi to preside over the 64th establishment anniversary of the 21st Infantry Regiment of the Royal Guards this morning.

He was former commander of this elite infantry regiment which is known widely as “The Queen’s Knights”.

Also attending the anniversary ceremony were Gen Anupong Paochinda, and Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, both were former army chiefs and commanders of this elite infantry regiment.

Gen Prayuth called off his scheduled luncheon party at the regiment at noon today and returned to Bangkok immediately after learning of the NLA’s vote.

Asked by reporters if he was approached before to be prime minister, he replied nobody approached him.

Pressed on with a question of whether he was ready to assume the position, he did not reply but just said let’s have the country go forward first.

He's the best hope this pretty hopeless land has at the moment. At least we can see he has had a pretty good stab at things before he becomes PM, unlike the rest of the failures and money grabbers who have ever held the post. I am convinced he's honest and sincere, and that's a good start, give the bloke a fair go.He if fails badly then I really don't see a lot of hope for the future here.

It's not just him running the country, these military dinosaurs that support him are the real problem.

would that sounds better "the self-proclaimed ruler" smile.png.pagespeed.ce.CwSpBGGvqN.png

"the self-proclaimed ruler" smile.png.pagespeed.ce.CwSpBGGvqN.png

The origin of that expression was Dubai you know.whistling.gif.pagespeed.ce.FVjgnKnWS1.pn

We perhaps should be be reminded that Prayuths ''election/ selection'' situation is nor was a unique one you know.

Quote

On 16 May 2011, the Pheu Thai party voted to name Yingluck as the party's top candidate under the party-list system (and presumably be the party's nominee for Prime Minister) for parliamentary election scheduled for 3 July. However, she was not made party leader and she did not join the executive board of the party. The ultimate decision was made by Thaksin. "Some said she is my nominee. That's not true. But it can be said that Yingluck is my clone... Another important thing is that Ms Yingluck is my sister and she can make decisions for me. She can say 'yes' or 'no' on my behalf," Thaksin noted in an interview.

it looks like critical thinking is missing in the above comparison.

One thing is for sure, he has a lot of expectations to live up to, he is putting himself into a situation of ever increasing power and many people are turning to him to clear up this mess, if that is even possible. IMO he is taking a huge risk and isn't much different from other egotistic people before him, just watch. Yes he has not done some of things that others have but he has put himself in power for the time being with no other alternative, he doesn't even have the credentials as a politician. Calling it elected as primeminister is a gross misreprentation of the truth

Why change now. They called the PTP a party that adhered to democracy!

But the Americans and the European Union, they preferred Thaksin's brand of democracy. And they don't like Thailand's present form of "electing".

:)

Cleaned up three beaches and a sidewalk so far, after months in power. But hey that qualifies as job well done for the cheerleaders here.

Throw your white stick away, open your eyes, Hey--how many beaches did PTP clean up, they had help from a petroleum company to pollute them.

Together with your -porky pies not a very clever post.

What does the cleaning up of beaches have to do with his election as PM?

That was clever, ASK Firestar it was his original comment, why not answer him?? I only threw the point back in his court.

Those of you in denial that the country has already taken the difficult turn for the better should perhaps at least bite ones tongues. Things can only get better and we should positively look forwards to new elections next year without the participation of the corrupt dinosaurs and their brethren from both sides of the political divide. ASEAN together with new elections will transform Thailand.... In the fullness of time.

I hope you're right...but it's not like this is the first time we've had a military coup, I 'think' all of the current players were around during the last 'cleanup' and like it or not were the one's who wrote the last constitution that is often touted as flawed. How many practice runs do they need to get it right?

Since this country has a huge military, which seems to be pretty much focused on domestic coups, I hope they are revising the textbooks at the Army College for the 'How to Stage a Coup 101' course

Oh come on! Hardly fair.

He has has also found additional employment for many of his uniformed colleagues and the odd family member.
