BANGKOK, Aug 28 -- Thailand is hosting the International Nuclear Science and Technology Conference 2014 in Bangkok from today through Saturday, paving the way for the kingdom to become a leader in nuclear science and technology in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the foreseeable future.

The three-day conference, themed "Moving Toward the Future with Nuclear Technology", is being attended by relevant experts, academics, scientists, and researchers on nuclear technology from around the world, aimed to provide a platform for ideas and experience exchange in order to lead to further research and development of knowledge internationally.

The conference is also a stage for Thailand to exhibit national potential to become an ASEAN leader in nuclear technology.

Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) director Somporn Chongkham acknowledged that Thailand is now a leader of nuclear technology in many areas, especially in the medical and agricultural sectors.

Dr Somporn pointed out Thailand has successfully produced 30 radiopharmaceutics and irradiated fruits for export to the United States, including longan, mangosteen and dragon fruit, along with using the technology in environmental and nutrient projects, as well as in safe nuclear programs.

The TINT chief said his agency plans to propose national nuclear strategies over the next 10-20 years to the new Thai government after it is formed. (MCOT online news)

Nuclear in the hands of thais is scary....

In all seriousness, if Thailand does anything nuclear, I'm moving as far away as possible and downwind from the nation.

Not to bash, but Thais can hardly keep their internet on when it rains. No way in hell I'm going to be anywhere near a nuclear Thailand.

in all seriousness...they are already doing it .wink.png

and of course lest not forget the research reactor, which has already been in operation for many many years

so guess you had better be buying that air ticket then rolleyes.gif

Unless of course you intend doing a "Chalerm" on us laugh.png

You got it wrong, they say Thais will HOST the conference, nothing was said about participating

in it as scientists, Thai Nuclear scientist? do the they exist?

Perhaps this paragraph is what worries us "The conference is also a stage for Thailand to exhibit national potential to become an ASEAN leader in nuclear technology."

Extremely worrying. The only crumb of comfort is the quote that Thailand is simply hosting the meeting.

The old A-levels in physics in the UK carried an option on Nuclear Physics which at least introduced those school leavers to the topic.

I have my reservations that a Thai university offers single honours degrees in physics or indeed mathematics? And if it does, to what level. Couple that with nobody failing and we would have a major disaster before long.

As I stated at the outset; this scenario would be a disaster if it were to run by Thai scientists.

Let's hope that Thailand really is only the host!

well goodbye then. Thailand already has a 2MW nuclear reactor and it has been operating for around 40 years. Of course we all know Tokay you are full of $h!#, and you just like like to bash Thais whenever the chance arises.

So you think Thais are only good at "services" and couldn't possible be scientists?....Ian, you've been asleep old man - possibly for the last 50 years.

Have no idea what an A-level is, but I have met Thais doing PhD's in American universities in Physics. Of course, you will never hear about them unless you actually work with them or regularly read scientific reseach journals.

Oh my god ! sad.png

If even a country ranking third in highest per capita iQ builds nuclear plants along a beach prone to tsunamis, what will a country do that is neither to be found in any of the lists here: http://www.statisticbrain.com/countries-with-the-highest-lowest-average-iq/

May god have mercy on our souls...

There is a lot of ignorance and misunderstanding that comes out as soon as the word 'nuclear' comes into play. I worked in nuclear physics at a major university in the US and for 20 years work in the field in Thailand. And in no instances here is it related to nuclear weapons or even directly to nuclear energy (reactors). It is a broad field that covers anything from smoke detectors to agricultural sterilization to medical applications.

Examples:

Radioisotopes used as tracers in environmental sciences.

Food and agriculture - testing absorption of fertilizers in plants

Insect Control

Food preservation

Water resources

Medical such as diagnosis and therapy

Sterilization

Smoke detectors

Instrumentation and radiography (checking welds in pipelines and other items)

Material dating

and many more applications world nuclear.org more applications at wiki

When I worked at a nuclear physics laboratory in the states we had a significant hydrogen explosion due to mishandling of sodium by a researcher. I was one of the first on the scene and grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the myriad of fires. However due to the explosion blowing out a water line the sodium was sitting in water so decided to leave well enough alone after a secondary explosion. Fire crews and news crews were on scene quickly and everyone evacuated. A TV news crew saw me explaining what happened and asked to interview me. Due to the fact the lab was called Nuclear Physics Research Laboratory, a bit of diplomacy was needed to minimize fears to the public. Went off well as I got a letter of commendation from the university president for 'defusing' a sensitive situation. My only 15 minutes of fame. biggrin.png

Nuclear power is the cleanest reliable energy source. That's not in question. A thousand fold more people will die each and every year from breathing air pollutants caused by coal burning power plants than have died in the entire history of nuclear power from nuclear accidents.

Referencing IQ statistics for the general population is meaningless, because the general population don't build nuclear power plants. Highly specialized and experienced companies, like GE Hitachi, do based upon recommendations from the IAEA.

Unless IQ stands for Idiot Quotent, how is it that so many people from countries with high IQ get fooled by scammers from Nigeria - one of the countries with the lowest IQ ?

I was doing research in both American and British universities (cosmology) and contrary to your experiences, I never met or worked with fellow Thai scientists. Nowadays they could be there but it's difficult to rationalise given the low.standards of education here. It's also true that the U.K. and American standards are way down too making the whole scenario rather frightening don't you think?

"The conference is also a stage for Thailand to exhibit national potential to become an ASEAN leader in nuclear technology."

So it would seem contradictory for TINT director Chongkham to say that Thailand is now a leader of nuclear technology in many areas, especially in the medical and agricultural sectors. No doubt there are nuclear technology applications where Thailand might some day become a leader in developing new technologies, but developing finished products for radiopharmaceuticals and irradiated fruits would be called "manufacturing."

A country's ability to become a leader in developing new technologies depends largely on its access to speciliaized and/or diverse nuclear research platforms. Thailand has no nuclear power plant reactors. It does operate a 2MW nuclear research reactor for testing, manufacturing, diagnostics, and irradiation.

Considering the "Report on the Current Nuclear Medicine Status of the Asian Member States from the Initial Cooperative Meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency/Regional Cooperative Agreement" presented on March 19-23, 2012 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Thailand seems to have only minimal access to platform capabilities compared to nuclear technology of CHINA and SOUTH KOREA. So one would expect that for now Thailand's expertise in nuclear technology is in its infancy. For Thailand to grow beyond being a child of nuclear technology will require a supportive population followed by a sustainable and significant economy to pay for research projects - something Thailand has struggled with throughout its modern history.

I would have a lot more confidence in Thailand moving towards Nuclear Power Generation if the Government were to enact and enforce safety standards across all industry and remove Government Control over the reporting of industrial accidents.

The implementation of transparent safety and environmental governance is not merely a nice to have, it is an essential component of safe industrial practice, no more so than in the application of Nuclear Power Generation.
