Where to buy this sofa in CM?

This photo was taken at Doi Chang cafe on the basement floor of Kad Suan Kaew. I really like the style. Anybody know where I can buy a similar piece of furniture in Chiang Mai?

Yeah, our cat would love it, too. Those sofas do seem to hold up well and they get a lot of use. I think the material of construction isn't rattan, but rather water hyacinth. I could be wrong, though. Rattan holds up relativly well to cat claw abuse, I'd love to see how water hyacinth does.

Thanks Nancy, knowing the name of the material will help with the search. I had initially thought it was wicker or rattan too, but then when I looked at some rattan furniture, I decided I didn't like rattan at all, and wanted the softer material.

I'll second that. For example, take a left in Hang Dong town onto the Ban Tawai road and look at the shops along that road. There's a shop a little way down on your left that sells very similar looking furniture...and others around there.

I also saw one very similar in Baan Tawai. It's on the main road near the markets. There are 2 wicker, b & chairs usually sitting out front. Walk through to the back room.

Takes up a lot of room just to seat 3 people two of which will be sharing limited foot space. Not a good couch for entertainment.

Hang Dong seems like the place then. The wife and I will take a look on our own later this week. This stuff would look good in our glass room near the front of the house. We want to buy things that later would work in a small business (for the wife). We have no idea what business she wants, but a nice sitting area for a beauty shop or a cozy snack/sale area would be good. With green plants, this furniture and dark wood is great just for relaxing at home too. Wonder about durability though.

Ban Tawai definitely. It is Water Hyacinth. Many many places design and sell furniture like that. You can have it custom made. Takes an average of 2 weeks and they will deliver.

As it happens I have a couch and chair set very similar to that. But the cushions on mine are worn and need to be replaced. In fact the brown cushions shown in the photo would be perfect! Can somebody please tell me where this Baan Tawai place is?

Baan Tawai is a whole area full of stuff being exported/sold, furniture, lighting, soft furnishings etc etc.

Head to Hang Dong, in the centre of Hang Dong at the traffic lights turn left (opp market)....this is the start of Baan Tawai....if you keep going down this road there are shops everywhere.....if you keep going you will come to an arch over the road, turn right there and yet many many more shops, maybe a 100 shops+.

The OP is wasting his time going to Baan Tawai for household furniture. That area mostly deals with arts and crafts and specialist types of furniture, mainly for export or fancy stuff.

If you like furniture that all looks like walmart assemble your self, or really hard furniture you can find it anywhere. If you want a more American style or leather go to the second floor of Index Furniture on the super highway about

1 km from Festival mall. The other Furniture Index stores do not carry these items.

What rubbish. None of these places have wicker or cane furniture.

We got ours 5 years ago (and he is till there) half way between Hang Dong Rd intersection and Ban Tawai turn off, the shops on the left hand side. Makes great hardy furniture. Ours is still in mint condition, just had cushions re upholstered though.

I have had furniture of water hyacinth before, and in high humidity areas it gets lethal attacks of mildew, fibers deteriorate, and your furniture is ruined. Nice while it lasts, but a very short lifespan in my experience. Rataan is much much better.

Thank you for the first definitive report of water hyacinth vs. rattan. Given the high humidity and cat use in our condo it would seem that rattan is a better investment.

Rattan is such a good value that I don't mind it being used as a cat scratcher from time-to-time. Especially when the target area changes. Its only when the cat decides he has a favorite area that the furniture starts to look nasty. (That's the part you turn toward the wall!) Actually rattan is so cheap -- that the real come-back is that the chair you put in the "cat room" and you go buy a new chair that you hope the cat doesn't attack (yeah, right, fat chance)

The cushions came with it, though in a standard beige, no colour options, but we liked it anyway.

The set (a 3 seater sofa, 2 chairs and a coffee table) were around 25,000, think he asked 30,000 originally.

My wife was just saying she thinks it would be well over 40,000 now.

Free delivery and the guy was a nice chap too.

It just cost 6000 baht to re upholster the cushions, and they were new really, all new foam too. So not bad value, and they look great.

This guy has been there as long as i can remember (16 years plus), so that says something here.

We love those types of cushions, too, big thick (and soft) ones that you can get "lost" in - if you have the inclination.

We had a sort of combined look of the first pic in this thread - and your pic. The trouble was, that it was so comfortable, that we mostly ended up dozing off on it....

After moving up north, we just couldn't take it with us - it was a huge and heavy piece of furniture and we reluctantly gave it all away to some friends that appreciated it.

Nice to know that it's available in this area, too.

There used to be an outfit called Hangdong Rattan, not sure if they are still around but there is a rattan shop on the 108 just north of The Samoeng junction on the northbound side. Our rattan is still good after many years.
