Boy, I'm just so out of touch with hardware it's not funny. Here's what I do know.....

I have an Android phone and I leave it running 24/7. I have a Windows PC and I switch it off whenever it's not in use.

Now, I want a new "device" that is easy to carry with me wherever I go (not a laptop), but it MUST have a FULL version of Windows and be able to be left switched on 24/7 without overheating. I heard that some hard drives these days don't have fans. Does that imply that they can be left running 24/7 without worrying about anything?

Is tablet even the right word to be using here?

Take a look at Microsoft's Surface Pro 3.

Powerful and portable

The new generation of Windows 8.1 tablets, laptops, and 2-in-1 PCs are thin, light, long-lasting, and powerful, so you can take your PC with you wherever you go and stay powered up and connected all day long.

Expecting a PC to run the full day on battery have lead to an extremely poor user experience when manufacturers attempt to pull it off. Microsoft's and Apple's 'Desktop' Operating Systems were designed to be quick, and quick means poor battery life.

Android, BlackBerry OS, Firefox OS, iOS, Mer, Tizen, Series 40, Sailfish OS, Ubuntu Touch, and Windows Phone are all custom built special purpose mobile operating systems specifically designed for low-power devices running usually light-weight client apps. Try playing some PC-style games on them and your battery will be dead in under two hours.

You can extend battery time on a 24/7 PC by allowing it to 'sleep' or even 'hibernate', but that does mean the computer isn't active during those periods -- just waiting to be reactivated from standby.

Also, Hard Drives don't have fans, but they do have spinning platters. Newer all electronic drives known as Solid State Drives don't have moving parts and work similar to Flash Thumb Drives but at much quicker speeds.

Both Sony and Samsung (among others) make small notebook computers with detachable keyboards and SSD hard drives. They can be used like tablets once the keyboards are detached but I don't understand why you would want to have a computer turned on 24/7. Surely you could turn it off and charge it when you sleep.
