BANGKOK: -- The junta yesterday said it would keep out of the dispute between Channel 3 and the National Broadcasting Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) over the channel's refusal to stop broadcasting its analog programming via cable/satellite TV, a top NCPO source said last night.

"It is a hot potato for the junta, but is really the responsibility of the NBTC," the source said.

The NBTC said yesterday it would seek the The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)'s advice on the matter. On May 24, the NCPO issued "Announcement No 27", allowing cable/satellite TV operators to continue broadcasting free TV channels along with the new digital ones. Channel 3 insists on continuing broadcasting via cable/satellite TV based on this.

If the NBTC asks the junta to make a decision on whether Channel 3 can continue broadcasting on cable/ satellite TV, then the junta would not make a decision and return it to the NBTC, the source said.
