ARMY
Airship back in air 'not to please Anupong'
The Sunday Nation September 7, 2014 1:00 am

PATTANI: -- The Army's airship used in the deep South is still in a good condition despite its emergency landing in Pattani on Friday, the Fourth Army Region commander said yesterday.

Lt General Walit Rojanapakdi also insisted that the decision to put the airship back in operation had not been made to please Interior Minister General Anupong Paochinda.

Walit explained that the airship was forced to land due to bad weather conditions rather than problems with its engine or other parts, adding that the emergency landing did not inflict any damage on the airship and that it was now in perfect operating condition.

He also denied rumours that the decision to put the airship back in operation was to please Anupong, adding that the airship had been in use for several weeks.

Anupong ordered the purchase of the airship while he was Army chief. The airship was forced to land once before when it was on a military mission to provide security surveillance for then-premier Yingluck Shinawatra in December 2012.

PM Gen. Prayuth worried about current severe flooding

PNEVN570906001000101_06092014_031204.jpg

BANGKOK, 6 September 2014 (NNT) - The prime minister is worried about the ongoing flood situation and is calling on related agencies to follow HM the King’s water management initiatives to deal with the problems.

Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha — the Prime Minister and leader of the National Council for Peace and Order — during his weekly “Returning Happiness to the People” TV program, expressed his worry over continued flooding in many parts of the country.

He said the NCPO and the Interior Ministry’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation have been working hard to assist all flood victims.

Gen. Prayuth reasoned that some areas experience constant flooding because of their low-lying geography and called on residents of such areas to remain calm while the problem is addressed.

For these areas, the NCPO leader suggested that changes must be implemented in the building style of the houses to help save residents from future flooding.

In addition, Gen. Prayuth said that concerned parties and agencies should fully adopt HM the King’s initiatives regarding water retention and management, in order to help prevent the regular occurrence of severe flooding.

Weather bureau warns upper Thailand and coastal region of heavy rain

BANGKOK, 7 September 2014 (NNT) - Residents in the upper part of Thailand and along the coastal region have been warned to watch out for possible heavy rain and flash flood.

The Meteorological Department has reported that a strong monsoon trough over the North and the Northeast of Thailand along with the moderate Southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are causing scattered shower in 60%-80% of the country.

It has also warned of heavy rain in various provinces, including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Petchabun, Loei, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani, Sakaeo, Chanthaburi and Trat. Residents of these provinces have been asked to beware of possible flash flood.

Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department and the Meteorological Department have jointly assessed the overall situation and predicted that the monsoon trough in the North will soon move downward to the central region where a low-pressure area is present. As a result, heavy rain can also be hitting the country’s regional area and lead to more water flowing into the Pa Sak River, while such a situation will likely continue until the end of October.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said that flooding in 24 provinces has already eased while the problem remains in Sukhothai, Tak and Nakhon Sawan.

The DDPM has collaborated with local officers to provide assistance to flood victims and to release water from the areas.

Thailand exports rice more than India, Vietnam

BANGKOK, 7 September 2014 (NNT) - The Association of Thai Rice Exporters has reported Thailand now exports more rice than India and Vietnam with the high possibility to reclaim the position of the world’s number one rice exporter.

President of the Association of Thai Rice Exporters Pol.Lt.Charoen Laothammathat said the Thai rice export situation substantially improved with a 25% increase in value. Thai rice exports rose mainly due to cooperation between the government and private sectors in promoting Thai rice in foreign markets and managing rice stock effectively, the president said.

Thailand exported 5.3 million tons of rice over the past six months, increasing by 70%.

The association’s president also suggested the government discontinue the rice pledging program which had made domestic rice price higher than the global market by as high as 50%. Pol.Lt.Charoen predicted that Thailand would export 9-10 million tons of rice by the end of 2014 and become the world’s number one rice exporter again.
