An interesting Port Forwarding problem

Bought a cheapo wireless IP camera, primarily as a precursor to a full IP based security system but really as something to play with and keep the grey cells turning.

Cam setup was reasonably easy once I found a working CD drive to read the disk (none of my PCs have optical drives) and actually read the instructions.

Works very well on the local network, just go to 192.168.1.107:81 (port 81) and away you go.

Now the fun part.

I forwarded port 81 on my router and tested the connection to the cam from my AIS 3G phone, success (I already have a No-IP account working) smile.png

Asked a mate to try from his fixed line, no connection sad.png Asked another mate to try, no connection sad.pngsad.png

Fast forward to this morning, I'm in the office.

Tried from my desktop PC (TOT fibre), no connection, verified it's still working from the mobile smile.png

Connected desktop to mobile tether, tried cam, working OK smile.png

Back to the TOT line, turned on my VPN (comes out in Singapore), cam now works from desktop, turn off the VPN, it stops.

I've not tried changing the camera port away from 81 yet, that's a job for lunch time (I'll try 8080), but has anyone got any idea what's going on? Every connection I've tried can connect to the router management page on port 80 (yes, I have changed the password).

If you want to give it a try it's here crossy.servebeer.com:81 Username is admin, no password.

Don't worry, it's in the downstairs entertainment area, you're not going to see my Missus doing anything other than ironing, maybe a few chooks wandering about smile.png

Connection worked just fine with TOT/Phuket connection without VPN.

Could the reason be simply that your office location and the location your friend tried have blocked the outgoing ports, which are not the usual 90, 443 etc? This is often the case with hotels and sometimes with offices.

Easiest solution would be to put the webcam to for example port 80 or 443. More complicated solution would be to install local server with proxy to redirect http calls to different servers based on their names.

Thanks chaps, it does indeed seem to be an outgoing port issue, trust me to choose the only friends who have their ports blocked, will try port 8080.

EDIT Just flipped it to port 8080

EDIT 2 Still won't work from the office without the VPN, awaiting reports from mate who couldn't connect yesterday. I just noticed Wifey still has her nightie on tongue.png

EDIT 3 He reports that it now functions. And that the fact that it's now upside down shows the mental age of ThaiVisa users :)

I think your wife will soon accidentally hit the camera with her mob if the camera follows her while she is cleaning the floor :)

Try port 443 and then use http://url:443/ without the https so you would get your office network to work as well.

Btw. What is the cost of the webcam you are using?

It's one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wireless-IP-Webcam-Camera-Night-Vision-11-LED-WIFI-Cam-M-JPEG-Video-EU-PLUG-T5-/400552582820?pt=UK_Film_Cameras&hash=item5d42cb5ea4 paid about 1500 Baht in Zeer.

Good idea on port 443, will test in a bit and report smile.png

More likely she'll hit me with the mop when i get home smile.png

EDIT BINGO! Port 443 gets out through the office block, well done that man smile.png

EDIT 2 Just a thankyou to everyone who has tested the camera, access is now private coz Wifey was getting a bit paranoid about it watching her :)
