BANGKOK: -- TOT's turnaround plan will focus on four existing businesses - fibre-optic broadband Internet, 3G wireless broadband, Wi-Fi and Internet calling.

The plan was recently resubmitted to the State Enterprise Policy Commission or "Superboard".

The state telecom enterprise will seek partnerships with companies, especially cellular operators, to market 3G and Wi-Fi services.

It will also dissolve non-core businesses.

TOT is one of seven state enterprises required by the Superboard to resubmit their survival plans.

TOT plans to reduce headcount in stages - 230 in 2015, 815 in 2016, 1,115 in 2017 and 960 in 2018 - through an early retirement programme costing Bt3.12 billion.

It has targeted cutting its workforce to 14,320 staff in 2018 from 16,000 now. It aims to save personnel expenses of Bt5 billion from 2015-26. It would cut total expenses of Bt1.03 billion this year and Bt1.16 billion next year.

It will seek new revenue from its landbank of 4,000 properties with title deeds worth Bt9.55 billion. Since 85 plots have high commercial potential, it has hired consultants to help find potential partners to commercially develop some promising properties.

TOT still has several legal disputes to resolve, of which four cases are related to the basic telecom infrastructure business, 17 to the mobile phone service business, one to telecommunications towers, 23 to the telephone and fixed broadband Internet businesses, and three to the cloud service.
