Thailand remains on high alert against Ebola

BANGKOK, 10 September 2014 (NNT) - Thailand continues to remain on high alert against the spread of Ebola virus despite the fact that the country’s risk of exposure is still considered low.

A meeting was held among health professionals in Phitsanulok yesterday in a bid to discuss prevention of the spread of the deadly virus. Local health units made known that the Ministry of Public Health remained vigilant amid continued reports of surging death toll from the virus in West Africa. A series of stringent measures including screening visitors entering Thailand from border crossings and airports have been implemented by health officials.

Foreign travelers and Thai nationals arriving in Thailand from the West African region have tested negative for Ebola so far.

The World Health Organization (WHO) made known that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed 2,288 people, with half of them dying in the last three weeks. The outbreak, which was first reported in Guinea in March this year, has also spread to Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Ebola spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments.
