SURROGACY
Surrogate mother 'not bullied'

THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- A SENIOR official at Din Daeng Police Station yesterday denied that three plainclothes detectives under his supervision had intimidated a woman carrying a surrogate child.

Pol Lt Colonel Praphoj Anusiri said the three officers were pursuing a different case, in which a Thai surrogate mother had allegedly violated a contract she signed with a Chinese father by going missing and failing to deliver the child in China. She was supposed to give birth in China so the child would be eligible for Chinese nationality.

This case was initiated when lawyer Phoowarin Thongkham contacted the Din Daeng Police Station seeking help to locate an agent who brokered the deal, he said. The three detectives later decided to seek information from the mother as a witness, the officer added.

However, the three detectives' pursuit of truth from this woman had allegedly been done in an intimidating manner, prompting her husband to file a petition with the Pavena Hongsakul Foundation for protection. The husband was initially unaware of his wife agreeing to carry a child for someone else.

The three detectives were identified as Chaiyuth Jamnongkarn, Jirasak Doikhamdee and Sarut Kanothorn, all holding the rank of senior sergeant major.

Meanwhile, a baby girl born to a surrogate mother in Chiang Rai is fighting for her life after being delivered prematurely, a source said yesterday. The baby's chance of survival is said to be 50:50, since she weighs a mere 1,740 grams - 200 grams below the normal, safe scale, the source said.

It is still unclear why the child, which is now under state care, had to be delivered early through caesarean section.

Shortly after giving birth, Duangthida Yingyon left Kasemrad Sriburin Hospital with lawyer Kong Suriyamonthol, who is representing the baby's father, Mitsutoki Shigeta.

Shigeta, a Japanese national, is at the centre of the surrogacy scandal and has reportedly fathered 15 babies to 11 surrogate mothers.

Preeda Kunama, chief of provincial human security office, said Duangthida had committed no crime.

Meanwhile, Lumpini police said the Department of Health Service Support would today file petitions against the operators of several clinics that offered unauthorised surrogacy services.

And on and on it goes and the adults in this vile trade don't give a tinkers cuss about the poor children and the effects it has on them now and the future.

It's a me me me society with this trading of babies involving dirt poor women and people willing to pay.

Plenty of homeless children out there.

Totally agree with you Parrot.

But also add that countries like Australia and Japan that seemingly turn a blind eye to their citizens doing this, or in the case of Australia even facilitate the immigration process should also look at their own societies.

Vile trade, vile people. exploiting the poor and facilitated by some governments somewhat two faced views on society.

All this while millions of children starve and have to survive, if they're lucky, in appalling conditions.

Why were the detectives looking for the woman, even if she made

a contract it would be a civil case and nothing to do with the police.

This whole business needs stopping, its all about money and greed,

who knows what the future holds for these babies, and the real reason

people are wanting these babies.
