webfact
New natural gas field found in Udon ThaniBy Digital ContentBANGKOK, Sept 12 -- A new natural gas field which could be used for the production of electricity and natural gas for vehicles (NGVs) has been found in the northeastern province of Udon Thani, said Kurujit Nakornthap, director-general of the Mineral Fuels Department.Mr Kurujit said a petroleum explorer near the Sin Phu Hom natural gas field in Udon Thani had informed that it had discovered the new natural gas field nearby and that it had told Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) so that the latter could amend its plan in its electricity production. He said the PTT Exploration and Production has already announced that gas reserves at the Sin Phu Hom field could produce natural gas for at least 15 years and EGAT has asked for an extension to buy natural gas from PTT for another three years, ending in 2024.To date, two commercial scale natural gas fields have been found in the northeastern region. The first, in Nam Phong district of Khon Kaen province is now producing 10-15 million cubic feet per day compared to the 100 million cubic feet per day previously.Mr Kurujit said EGAT plans to construct a new electricity plant in substitution for Nam Phong electricity plant which would be used until 2024 as the demand for electricity in the northeast rises more than 4.5 per cent annually.(MCOT online news)-- TNA 2014-09-
Costas2008
After all this Som Tam consumption in Khon Kaen and Udon Thani, I'm not surprized of the natural gas deposits in the area. Farangs are also main contributors to this natural wealth.

JoeLing
The first, in Nam Phong district of Khon Kaen province is now producing 10-15 million cubic feet per day compared to the 100 million cubic feet per day previously. So they produce now less then 15% of what they produced before? No wonder our electricity is s**t. Or, is it just bad reporting? Popular Post DonaldBattles
There is natural gas and oil in many places in Thailand. Thailand refuses to pay for advanced technology to get it out of the ground. They are unwilling to provide a meaningful share to those who know how to do the job. Thailand could become energy independent if it wanted to PTT has called the shots so lang that the country is 25 years behind in exploration.
oxo1947
That town is absolutely booming already, being the first choice for a lot of Thai/Chinese after the BKK floods. Or, they could be opting to keep their assets underground till they are ready to get the maximum benefit for Thailand out of those assets at a later time when they are ready. I have worked in the oilfields for the past 40 years, quite a few of those years in Thailand. There are more wells drilled in Thailand every year than any other country in the world! The Gulf of Thailand has over 200 producing platforms, Chevron are a far bigger operator in Thailand than PTT are. On what are you basing your statement that "the country is 25 years behind in exploration"?

All as fields will reduce their production with time (unless expansion is possible by increased investment).
