Pattaya To Suffer Drought

PATTAYA – September 11,2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; Recently-The Royal Irrigation Department revealed that Pattaya might encounter a severe drought because of the lack of rain. Plus the water which is in the reservoirs now might not be insufficient.

Mr.Boonsom Yutithampinyo-director of the water management and development- revealed after the conference that the water in reservoirs in Eastern parts of Thailand were still ok but Chachoengsao, Rayong and Chonburi were very low.

The amount of water was less than expected due to the unseasonable amount of rainfall. According to the statistics rainfall was 30% less than expected for this time of year. As a result of this the amount of water in 8 reservoirs in east of Thailand were a lot less than the normal (29 million cubic meters compared with 43 million cubic meters).

Meanwhile Mab Prachan reservoir which is the main reservoir that supplies water to Pattaya had just 5 million cubic meters of water compared with 8.8 million cubic meters of water this time last year. The water works has to produce about 180,000 cubic meters of water per day. Plus it’s expected that El Nino will occur at the end of this year which can affect the seasons.

Was just discussing this w/ a Thai friend. Quite true: this has been an exceptionally dry season. (Let's try hard not to read any apocalyptic implications into the fact.) Keep waitin' for the skies to fall. Well, we still got a couple months. Suppose it comes back w/ vengeance!

Been convenient for motorbike riders, though.

And now they are forecasting an even drier period next year.

They won't be able to chuck it around thoughtlessly when Songkran 2015 arrives

"Plus the water which is in the reservoirs now might not be insufficient." Which would mean it is sufficient. Just poor English. Meanwhile, all these condos keep going up like mushrooms. EIA approved. One would think an environmental impact might take at least a look at adequate water supplies.....

The ridiculously wasteful Songkran will go ahead as usual. Don't expect any change there.

I doubt the water being thrown at Songkran amounts to a significant amount, certainly not compared to all the homes. hotels and condos with swimming pools to keep Khun Farang cool and wet.

Better to put a halt to construction of more condos and hotels.

If the rain continue pouring down as it did last night they dont have to worry about this.

What we've had so far as rainfall will make hardly any difference at all.

Have you seen the weather forecast on this website after Wednesday? It's going to be sunny and partly cloudy all week , and we are only two weeks away from October when the rainfall becomes noticeably less.

It's just not going to happen this year and if it's the same next year or even worse which they are forecasting it won't be good.sad.png
