Dual Citizensip? Thai/Naturalized American

Featured Replies

Am seeking guidance to obtaining dual citizenship... Thai and US. Both of my parents were Thai. They divorced and my mother married an American GI. My mother, brother and I were brougnt to the US in 1969 during the Vietnam War. I was 7 years old. I became a Naturalized American citizen at 8. Is it possible for me to obtain Thai citizenship? Without physically flying over to Thailand?

Thank you for taking time to read and help steer me towards dual citizenship. smile.png

You already have Thai nationality from birth. Since you were born here your birth is already registered here.

I am certain when you first traveled to states you had a Thai passport. Does your mother have your passport or birth certificate for here? All of that would of been needed when you obtained US citizenship.

If you don't have anything to prove your Thai nationality you would have to either have to authorize somebody here to obtain your birth records at the Amphoe where your birth was registered or make a trip and do it yourself.

My mother passed of cancer 6 yrs. ago. I have only... her Thai passport, a copy of her "Family Registration Card", her divorce decree from my American GI step-father (whom I have no contact with nor will) and my Naturalization paper. I have a close American friend living in Thailand that is offering assistance. How would I authorize him to obtain my birth record?

Thank you so much again.

Saiyud, you do have Thai citizenship by birth...BUT the important thing is obtaining a Thai ID (and passport), which is the proof of citizenship. The Thai ID is what gives proof of identity and is necessary if you want the benefits of Thai citizenship (i.e. ability to own land, and pretty much anything to do with anything legal in Thailand--revolves around having a Thai ID). If you have your expired passport you can contact Thai consulate to obtain a new replacement passport. Since you were born in Thailand you will have birth certificate at the local Amphur where you were born. The Thai ID is a little bit tricky, and from going through the process myself, I can say it is unlikely that you can do really do it without going to Thailand. You would have to be registered on a Thai Tabian Bahn/Yellow Book/Housebook, and bring your birth certificate to the amphur where you are registered on the housebook. In order to get my Thai ID had to bring in my mother, who had a Thai ID, and bring two Thai citizens who personally swore I was a Thai citizen.

EDIT: posted response before seeing your latest post.

1. Do you know where you were born? I mean hospital? The birth certificate is at the amphur where the hospital is located. You would have to send friend to that amphur to obtain Birth Certificate. I have no idea what they would need to allow your friend to obtain your birth certificate.

2. Where are you located in the U.S.? You should contact a Thai consulate or embassy for what they would need from you to obtain a Thai passport.

The ""Family Registration Card", might have you listed on it if that is what it is. If it is her ID card it would not.

At least having that card should give you a starting point of where to look for your birth record since it should have her registered address on it.

In order to for your friend to get the documents needed you would need to send him authorization by way of a power of attorney in Thai notarized by the embassy or one of the consulates.

I am ashamed to admit, I do not know where nor what hospital I was born. I recall only living in Tahkli and Korat. According to her "Family Registration Card", my mother's "Relationship to head of family" is: niece. House No. 122 Village No. 9 Road Dejudom

Name of the place Nongpailom

Tambol: Phoklang

Amphur: Muang

Province: Korat

Possibly the Uncle would know where I was born?

I live in Holland, MI. From my search, the closest Thai Embassy is in Chicago. I will contact them.

Thank you. <3

Looks like what you have is the info for your mother's registration on Thai housebook. If you can contact your uncle or other relatives who would know where you were born, you should do so. You will need a copy of your birth certificate.

Yes, contact Thai embassy and see what they need. If you have more questions post questions here or send me a P.M. if you need further assistance.

Where you were born is not all that important it is where your birth was registered.

At least you have a starting point of where to look. Korat province is now Nakhon Rathahasima.

It is now Mueang Nakhon Rathahasima. Pho Klang is now a municipality. Nong Phai Lom is also a municipality now

Takhli is a district in Nakhon Sakon province. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakhon_Sawan_Province
