Tips for Tourist Visa Application in Osaka

Featured Replies

Hey all,

tl;dr : Aussie in Japan wanting a 60 day double Tourist Visa. Consulate documentation suggests I need to submit stuff I can't possibly have whilst consulates in other countries don't have the same requirement. What do I do?

I'm an Aussie who stupidly decided that applying for a visa outside of my own country was a good idea.

Popping into the Osaka consulate the other day, they were closed but they did have some information pamphlets at the front that stated that I need the usual photos, passport photocopies etc plus the following:

Japanese guarantor letter in english

Copy of passport of guarantor

Copy of Japanese residence card

Thai guarantor letter in english

Leave document from employer (letter from police commissioner if self-employed)

Original bank statements (no Internet print-outs)

Naturally I was concerned as I'm only after a standard double tourist visa with the intent of extending it whilst in the country. I'm only passing through Japan so I'm not a resident, have no ability to get a Japanese guarantor and I'm self employed so that's even more confusing. Plus I don't actually get paper statements from the bank.

Ugh!

I have a feeling that even though the information was in plain english and under the heading '30/60 day tourist visa' (there were other instructions supplied for the various other forms of visas), it may be an error in translation and I shouldn't be as worried. Their website doesn't help either as it gives different requirements, which are also unreasonable - http://www.thaiconsulate.jp/en/appli_1/

After googling, I've realised that there is little recent information aside from vague anecdotes.

Is there anyone here who has recently dealt with the process that can give me some tips?

Otherwise, if they are particularly strict with their visa process, I guess I'm going to have to apply in a country elsewhere - any suggestions for consulates near Thailand that don't have these ridiculous requirements?

From previous reports by members that tried to get a visa in Japan you will not get one unless you have residency there.

IMHO best alternative consulates are in Laos, both Vientenne and savannahket do tourist visas. savannahket does same day but Vientenne requires overnight stay [pick up passport day after applying].
