I am told; is this true?; that a Thai National can enter Thailand on an expired passport. Particularly if they also have a Thai ID card. Would a UK citizen with an expired British Passport be able to enter Britain in the same way?

Could in either case they get on a plane? If they left the UK on a British Passport and then offered an expired Thai passport on entry to Thailand, what would happen. If they left Thailand with a valid UK visa on a Thai passport (could they leave Thailand on an expired UK passport?) but on arrival offered their expired UK passport? I know it all sounds a bit mad...but what?

In general you can enter your own country with an expired passport. If you can travel on it is another matter, I think that many airlines in many countries will refuse you and it is the question if you would get through immigration at the country you would be leaving from. They will want to see a valid passport.

But if someone leaves Thailand with a valid Thai passport he has a valid ID to travel on and could enter the UK on the expired UK passport and doesn't need a visa.

Thank you. Part of the problem arises from the children needing new Thai Passports; but there being a stipulation that to apply for their new Thai Passports the mother need to be present as they under 16. In one case the mother has been, shall we say, missing for 3 years. I am told we will need to go to go to a court to secure an exemption from thisThai rule. Thoughts?

Are you sure ?

So you can leave Thailand on a Thai passport, then enter Britian on an expired British passport ?

For 1, why would you want to do that ? 2, Don't you think the authorities would want to know why you was swapping passports about like a bag of sweets.

Just because you seem to like deleting my posts doesn't mean you wouldn't end up being detained whilst questions were being asked.

A Thai can enter on an expired Thai passport.

A British citizen can enter the UK with a expired UK passport. Check here: http://www.staralliance.com/en/services/visa-and-health/

The problem with traveling on an expired passport is leaving the country you are in.

In the scenario you mentioned a Thai that entered the country with a Thai passport (expired or valid) could leave on a valid Thai passport and use the expired UK passport to travel to and enter the UK.

In case of a Thai passport one can enter Thailand on one, but not leave Thailand. For the UK it is probably the same.

To get new Thai paspsorts you must have permisison form the other parent as well, unless that parent doesn't hold parental rights. So your only option would indeed be to go to court and ask to be awareded sole parental responsibility over the children. But this is a long process, especially if the mother can't be found.

You coud try with a letter from the amphur confirimng you are the sole person taking care of the children. But no succes guarenteed.

People swap passports all the time at borders and that is no problem. It is what most people to who hold dual nationality as than they don't need a visa for either country they hold the nationality of.

I removed your post and had not gotten a chance to post a comment. It was abusive and unhelpful.

People with dual nationalities or those that have 2 passport for the same country swap passports all the time without a problem.

See my post for info on entering the UK on an expired passport.

Why no contact the British embassy and get the children new British passports rather than bashing around trying to get Thai passports ?

Would be much easier.

To leave on their UK passport they must have entered on their UK-passport.

Only if they have never left Thailand before is it possible to leave on the UK-passport with the help of the Thai birth certificate showing they were born in Thailand. But in that case immigration can ask for permission from the mother to leave the country. (That doesn't always happen, but seems to happen more and more).

I call recall cases of sole responsibility being granted by an Amphoe with witnesses stating the mother had abandoned the children. The same can be done for divorce.

Nobody is as you suggest, swanning around the world. These are kids who need to travel. There is a problem with the new Thai passports which Ubonjoe has addressed The only problem

I see is the validity of a UK passport, if Trendy cannot supply new ones in the required timeframe to get on a plane to the UK. They could I suppose get emergency travel documents.

The Thai passport is a different issue if they entered Thailand on a Thai passport which is now expired. What we do,

like many people, is present both passports at LHR and Suvannabhum. The possession of a Thai passport is as I understand it only relevant on entry at Suvannabhum, though when they leave they have to complete a departure card,. On returnfrom LHR to Thailand if there was a problem with the validity of their Thai passport on leaving the UK they could enter Thailand on a tourist visa on a UK passport.

Presumably once here as children cannot overstay the fact that they entered on a UK toursit visa but are Thai nationals is irrelevant? or not?Could they leave Thailand on an expired UK passport? I am inclined to doubt it?

Yes I know you are not swanning around. But your first post was just a general post about 'someone' travelling from Thailand to England or the other way around.

There was no mention of it being about your children. That is the reason I made a post that as far as I can make out was impossible to have been abusive.

Still it makes a change from 'a friend of mine'
