New command centre set up to control traffic nationwide
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Command for Traffic/Accident Solutions will officially spring into action late next month. "The structure of this command will be concluded by early next month," Pol Maj-General Adul Narongsak, deputy Metropolitan Police chief for traffic affairs, said yesterday.

Agencies such as the Metropolitan Police, Highways Police and the Highways Department will be working together in the new command.

"It's necessary that we have an agency to oversee the overall picture of the country's traffic affairs," Adul said.

Bangkok has long been notorious for its traffic, though as urban development spreads further, bad traffic is affecting other big cities too.

Commenting on the state of traffic in Bangkok, Adul said agencies now agreed that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) should cut the number of street-stall zones to no more than 250.

These stalls often slow down traffic as motorists stop to pick up items, he said.

"The BMA has allocated some Bt30 million for high-tech equipment that should allow a better flow of traffic," Adul said.Such devices included lane-changing detectors.

I think bangkok should run Bangkok's roads before they touch anyone else's.

What is a nationwide traffic management system? What can someone in bangkok do to influence a traffic problem in chiangmai or let alone pattaya.

What a waste of wonga.

I think General P.M. Prayuth needs to strangle this golden goose before the lifestyle audit in five years time finds some have rich lifestyles , this is not only unworkable it is stupid , the reason I say stupid is, the budget allowed wouldn't be enough for a national coverage , Narongsak has not presented this at any forum , so another PTP styled waste of money, plans outa the blue. Check it out General. bah.gif

"spring into action"...!

Who in their right mind thought this little gem up? I can't wait to see it work! Sounds very much like finding jobs for the thousands of cops who do nothing all day and have done so for years.

However, what they hope to achieve by having a nationwide control centre I do not understand. Bangkok's problems are Bangkok's problems and do not affect any other district. The traffic in Ubon, for example, relates in no way whatsoever to the traffic in Korat, for example. At best, traffic management should be devolved to Provincial level only.

What this country desperately needs are cops doing their job on the streets, not sitting inside their cop shops smoking and drinking coffee or outside 7-11s all day smoking and talking.

This is 100% true, I can notice this every day, sometimes even double parked, blocking all trafif. Second thing the should forbit taxis to park on buss stops. As a daily participant of the Metropolitan bangkokian traffgi mess, I dare say that 95% of all traffic jams is created bij the motorist themselves.

The BIB are completely uselles. Harsch punischement like heavt traffic fines and impounding carsntaxis en minivans and desrtoying them is the only solution. In 2 month's time it will be heaven to drive in the Bangkok metropolitan area.

'... Such devices included lane-changing detectors.' I think they also include a now somewhat dated computerised traffic light system. Perhaps the police could bring that up-to-date ... then use it!
