Jimlove you have a lot to answer for.... You've triggered a craving here and it won't be satisfied by any of the poor substitutes mentioned here, I want the real thing. Have to get a bag slipped into my next legal papers courier envelope.....

This is a bad thread- wasnt even thinking about liquorice till I read it, now I cant get it out of my head. Cant see it in shops here so ordered on ebay.

See if it arrives next week-or goes missing like other mail from uk.....

If the postie knows it's got Berty Bassett in it, you'll be out of luck tongue.png

Seriously, and without going back and reading all the posts I can't remember who it was who said it, but he had the best idea. Get an electinic version of your address and use it as lables for anyone sending stuff from home or try to use it in on-line ordering - there may be a special place where you can put comments, or if you order a lot from someone such as Amazon, contact them, explain about Thai script, and ask them if they can do a copy and paste and use that as your defualt address. I've been trying for a few days to get an electronic version of my address, but I'm not making myself understood, or they don't get the concept of people overseas using different script to Thai for important things like mail. I'll get there eventually.

If you have a Thai wife, it's probably best to have her name included on the label, again in Thai script, so it looks like it's being addressed to a Thai. The only part of the label that needs to be in Roman script is the word Thailand. I've just thought about that bit, perhaps I could get someone to write my name in Thai Script, or a close equivalent to it - or even Somchai Somtamseller if they want, doesn't matter to me if it makes it more likely that I'll get my mail. I mentioned in another thread, no packages (and there have been a lot) have ever gone missing, but countless birthday and Christmas cards have been lost in the system.

O ye of little faith Konini. My half kilo of licorice cuttings arrived yesterday from Uk Ebay (dandy sweets have a great selection) and they are wonderful.

Postage was too much of course, but as a trial run it worked, and satisfies my craving- for now.....

liquorice cuttings? Why did you have to tell me? That is what I call cruel and unusual punishment.

As an aside, I had a 5 year old come over to visit last week, and as I was in Central Festival I thought I'd pretend I'd won the lottery and pop into Marks & Spenser to see if they had jelly babies and such to make her a little nibbles tray of her own. 'Know what I got? Dolly Mixtures. Woo-hoo!

(I've never had a real sweet tooth apart from liquorice and white chocolate, but back in the middle ages when I first met Mr K. he (for reasons unknown) bought one of those tiny bags of Dolly Mixtures for me on our first date - I think he'd just filled his bike up and it was the only thing in front of him at the garage when he paid (to say nothing of him being a very poor apprentice toolmaker earning GBP 12.50 a week with no money to spare). I don't remember ever having any before that, although I'm sure I must have had them when I was younger, it wasn't exactly the kind of thing I'd even think of buying for myself. After that, he bought me a bag of Dolly Mixtures once or twice a month and always for my birthday or if I was a bit ill or if he'd done something wrong right up until we left England).

Isn't it strange how some little things trigger the most incredible memories? That day (it was a declared a bank holiday for the engagement of Charles and Diana) changed my life and sealed my fate forever. And I hadn't thought of it for years and year until I saw the Dolly Mixtures in M&S, and on that particular day I was otherwise occupied with something more pressing so I put it aside in my brain, but it was the first thing I though of when I saw your post on one of my favourite things, which most people think of as waste, good old liquorice cuttings, which is nothing like Dolly Mixtures but that's the first thing that popped into my head.

Thank you. He's in the doghouse at the moment, but thinking about that day has really cheered me up, and maybe I'll let him come out of the doghouse sooner than I otherwise would have. Seriously, thank you, you've made my day.

Does he know Dolly mixtures get him off the naughty step?

Shhh. If he finds out that there's a source of them within walking distance, he'll be getting away with murder.

'Seriously, thank you, you've made my day' Really?? That's a whole new experience for me then. Feels good 555.

From reading many of your posts Konini, I sense their is a book waiting to be written....maybe in the Bill Bryson Thunderbolt Kid genre, or Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays-or even Kathy Lette? I know I know, you dont have time- but a few scribbles every day rewarded with a dolly mixture or 2 per page? Or maybe you are an authoress already?

Award winning I'll have you know - in the days when they were called travelogues, before the word blog had been invented, someone, I have no idea who, entered this in an international travel writing competition. The first thing I knew about it was when I got the email telling me I'd been voted as being the best. In the whole world. OK, so there weren't that many people doing it back then, but still. Me. The best! The novelty wore off after a couple of years travelling, but the website still constantly gets over 20,000 hits every month, even though I haven't been updating it for a few years. It was getting up to 50,000 hits a month at it's peak. So many people were telling me to get advertising and sponsorship organised, but that would have made it a job and I knew I wouldn't do it if I had to, so it would have stopped a lot earlier. There are some right old tales on there, Mr K is an accident waiting to happen, and I can spin a good yarn. Some people who don't know us think I was making it up, but seriously, you couldn't make up some of the things that just happen to him. Every word on there is true.

As for feeling good, here's something I've tried to do for years; pay a compliment to a random stranger every day. At first they are a bit stunned, then the look on their face when they realise you're being serious and the smile that breaks out is priceless. It makes their day, and knowing that I've caused that to happen makes mine. You have to be genuine, you can't say someone is beautiful if they're not, but there's always something to find to say. Nice eyes, hair colour or style, shoes, clothes, anything. You can always find something nice to say about someone. It works equally well on men and women, young and old.

Try it, it really does make you feel good for ages.

I didn't know that about liquorice and potassium. I mentioned in this thread I think (maybe another one on food) that every blood test I've had since childhood has come up with low potassium. I eat banana's rather than take tablets, but like you I also got very, very serious leg cramps after surgery on my back 14 years ago. I'm going to ask Dr Google about this, I may have to start taking potassium tablets after all.

That or eat more bananas. They have made a world of difference in my life. 70 years of leg cramps no more.

When I was working I would get cramps in many different parts of my body. I tried the Calcium Magnesium but the only thing that ever really worked for me was Calcium Magnesium with Citrate.

the ones with other vitamins and zinc never did it for me.

  • 1 year later...

I usually log on to Van deVeen’s Dutch store in Holland,Mi USA and have some mailed. They have many brands and types…at least 100 to choose from.

I live in Huay Sai,Mae Rim and I’ve never had a problem with deliveries. You’ll find them on any search engine.

Hope this was helpful.
