Eating at local people home?

Hey guys, I don't know if this is the right place to write, but I thought you can help me. I am planning my holidays in Thailand in a month and I am in the process of planning everything :) I was checking the best places to try authentic Thai food and I discovered this page www.plateculture.com where you can eat at home of the residents of Thailand and I wanted to ask whats your opinion on that? Maybe someone been on some dinners? Maybe you could recommend the person from plate culture who is the best? Thanks in advance to any of your answers!

Nice site, but paying +/- 700 THB per person to eat at peoples home blink.png

What about the following idea? When you arrive you will meet Thai People, get invited to their home and you offer to pay for the food. thumbsup.gif

However I must agree it is a nice concept and I could be tempted to try it, beats going to a restaurant wai.gif

But is it way more expensive than in the restaurants? I saw people are cooking many meals and I think this is way more interesting than restaurants, because you actually get to talk to local people. I know that I will meet Thai people, but I have some trust issues and I wouldn't be for going to a house of some random people (no offense!), but I really hope to dive into culture and I want to see as much as I can as traveling to Thailand for me probably won't happen any other time soon :)

Thai food is cheap, if we go to a Thai food restaurant its hard to get a bill over 1500 Thb with Four persons and that is drinks included.) No problem with spending that much (even double that amount) in western / seafood restaurants.

I understand bout the trust issue but you never know what's going to happen, and last thing, forget about planning everything, you seldom keep to your schedule after you have arrived, instead make a To-do list or things I would like to see. ;)

But as I said before that website is a nice thing, and if I would stay in Bkk, I will be tempted to try it.

Good luck

Cool website the Indian food look appetizing but I think a whole Indian family would talk the ear of me and would probable need a pause button so I could eat in peace cheesy.gif

They do indeed! I've never met Indian people before (liek eye to eye), even if they talk a lot it would be very interesting to hear it! Anyways, I was planning on visiting Thai people, somehow sounds more fair while visiting Thailand ;)

I know, I was just trying to be humorous.

Anyway you don't need this service as within the first week of been here I was invited to a Thai household to eat an array of Thai dishes that were colorful and tastes great.

I must admit it toke a bit of watching and learning to get with the concept of sharing large dishes of food with everyone around the table as I was used to western meals where everyone gets their individual plates of food.

Anyway some might say that the tradition Thai meal should be enjoyed while sitting on the floor not in some Hi So apartment in Bangkok.

Come here and mingle with the locals and they will be only happy to join you in eating Thai food that their are so very proud off.

The real pleasure in eating Thai food with Thai people is gaining an understanding of which components of a dish to eat together to get the best flavour.

Shovelling in the food is great but Thais will be amused by this....learn to watch more carefully how they eat and you will enjoy your food more.

Doing some thing like that posted on the web site, is not going to provide you with Thai food that the average Thai would eat... Going to a home, like that would, I think be giving you "westernized Thai food" .... at very inflated prices... IMHO!

Food tastes, varies around the country, but when I have visited Thai homes for a normal "every day meal", there are a few things that might be too spicy and have a sour taste or even smell that some one not used to it would have a hard time eating it!

Plus trying to sit on the floor cross legged which many of them do, you won't find it comfortable!

If you want to try Thai food, and get a taste, go to a 40 baht food stall or restaurant, away from tourists areas, you'll see many Thais eating at... that would give you an idea of what many Thais really eat! wink.png

If you are doing a tour through the country just stop at a village. You will find many families have small shop fronts to their houses selling food to supplement their income.

Do you want genuine, as it is made in the home food ? then this is the way to go. They may even invite you to stay if they like you. Some of them buy pre-prepared food from the local markets to sell as well.

My inlaws are in Ban Pao near Kaset..... there is a market at 4:30 / 5:00am every morning, 4:00pm onwards every day. It's a great place to be....

Which area are you heading to ?

Thai cuisine is very regionalised. Northern food, Eastern food, Southern food and many variations en-route. Every province has its own specialities at certain times of the year.

Bangkok has everything you could ever dream of .. but to be invited to eat in someones home is a completely different experience. You will never find the taste of a home cooked food on the street. Just ensure your hosts don't westernize your experience, Thais make a big thing fluffing about the heat and chilli's ( because they don't know mexican or indian food ) but often the food is too salty / fishy / sour / sweet for our palette or just plain bad smelling.

Thats quite an interesting site, it looks a bit boutique tho' .. I would rather have an authentic meal cooked by someones mum in a little shack. Theres some great milage there for an English speaking Thai, guiding you through the market, coming home doing the prep and cooking, and the meal itself isn't the full ticket without sitting on a mat on the floor ( although I detest it and insist we use the table )
