I am currently on a single entry Non-immigrant B visa. It is coming up for a renewal. I would like to convert it to a multiple entry visa. I hoped to do this during the renewal process.

My employer is not familiar with multiple entry visas and says that I have to do this AFTER my visa is renewed. I'm thinking this will end up costing more money as well as a lot of my time if I do it after the fact.

Does anybody know if a single entry visa can be converted to multiple entry and if so, can this be done during the renewal process?

Thanks!

I think you will have to apply for a 1 year extension of stay based on legal employment in Thailand (Work Permit) and then apply for a multiple re-entry permit.

You can obtain a multiple re-entry permit on your current Non-B visa, but it will only last till the date stamped in your passport currently.

If for any reason you do not have a work permit then you will have to leave the country to obtain a new non-B VISA.

The multiple re-entry permit is more like 3800 Baht and not 1900 baht as quoted previously.. An extension of stay will cost you an additional 1900 Baht

Thank you for the reply. So are you saying that I cannot apply for a multiple entry visa when my visa is renewed? That seems so counter intuitive.

I have a work permit and everything is good on that end. I'm just trying to get the visa type changed during the renewal process.

A visa is obtained from an embassy or consulate, and extension of stay is issued by an immigration office.

You are legal, so you can obtain an extension of stay (1 year) to extend you current entry by one year at the immigration office.

But you need that "leave by" stamp in your passport first and your re-entry permit is valid until that date.

It is common practice to obtain the 1 year extension followed by a multiple re-entry permit annually at the same time.

You cannot do any thing with a visa once you are in the country.

You can apply for an extension of your 90 day permit to stay the visa allowed you to get when you entered the country with the proper documents from your employer. You can get a re-entry permit that will be valid for the length of your permit to stay.

whistling.gif Perhaps, but unlikely.

What they will want you to do, their preferred method, is for you to get an extension of that visa in the 90 days the visa is still valid.

This can be done at your immigration office.

This will be an extension of the original visa for good for one year or the term of your contract.

Once you have that one year extension you can also purchase a multi entry re-entry permit that will last for the same period,

That multi entry permit will allow you exit and re-enter Thailand by using it.

Your HR department should be able to help you with this ...... but you need to understand many Thais are not familiar with the process, as Thais do not need such things as visas and re-entry permits.

You may need to do some of the work in person to get it done, particularly if your company is not familiar with the process.

It's not difficult, but be prepared to go with someone from your company to sign papers and such at least until they learn the procedure.

Once you have the extension for one year you will need to do 90 day reporting..... either by going to immigration once every 90 days, or by mailing it in.

Again your HR people or human relations people should learn how to do this,

It's really quite easy, and once you learn the routine, can be easily done in one trip to immigration as required.
