What to do with a 100+ color slides from an early 50s Bangkok trip ? SCAN them ? Where ?

I bought a bunch of 35mm color slides at a Flea Market on the weekend in California

they were all taken in the 1950s on tourist trips in Europe and Asia

I do not have a slide projector so can only look at them with a back light ,

there are about 5 trays marked Bangkok ,.....another 10 trays of Japan and a couple of Korea , another 50-100 trays of Europe and the USA

I will try and get a slide projector this week so at least I will have a better idea

Is there a cheap place that scans color slides ? there are 100 bangkok ones but probably 1000-1500 total , not sure if they are interesting or not !

is there a USB slide scanner I can use on my computer that is not too expensive ?

And then what do I do with them ? I assume that Thai libraries and schools have tons of old photos , so they do not need another 100 or so

Anyone else ever run across a big batch of slides ? and what did you do with them ?

thanks for your ideas

If you are located in BKK there is a forum member located there that may happily scan them for you.

You need to ask in the 'photography and the arts' sub forum though.

Or ask a mod to move this thread there.

There is camera "lens" you can buy and you slip the slide into it and photograph it. The lense has a backlight and proper exposure. It also of course has the proper focus.

You have to also learn how to clean the slides perfectly because any hair or speck of dirt will be in the photo. There are liquid solutions for cleaning slides, but you have to use a lint free cloth.

Hang on and I'll try to find one of those lenses via google.

HERE Read to your heart's content.

Here's a scanner you may be interested in however I have no idea

if it's available in LOS. Links below....

Hope this helps you. You can also try AV camera in BKK to see

if they can scan the pix or if they know where you can accomplish

this without paying an arm & a leg per scan.

I had hundreds of climbing slides scanned and put on a CD at a photo print shop in Future Park (Close to the ground floor I think).

I'm sure any competent photo print shop in BKK area could do this for you.

They charge about $1 for each slide in Canada - so not an option.

Cost for about 50 or 60 on a CD was maybe 300Baht.

Just be sure you clean them well first - that's your job, not theirs

OP I just thought.

Be careful! You don't know if any of the images infringe Thai laws.

How would you prove that if they contained indecent material, that the film is not yours?

Edit: arrrrgh forget that I was thinking film, you have slidesfacepalm.gif

I have Nikon Coolscan scanner. Willing to offer the service to scan your slides for a nominal sum, mainly due to the interest of how Bangkok used to look like in the 50s.
