Heavy rain and landslides in Uttaradit

UTTARADIT: -- Flash floods and successive landslides occurred in two villages in this northern province Friday, putting local residents in at-risk areas on alert, but no casualties have been

reported.

Continuous rain during the past few days led to a repeat flash flood in Huaythongsad in Lablae district, which was hit by a flash flood and mudslide on May 22.

A new flood Thursday night prompted 40 families in Pamub village to evacuate to higher ground as the floodwaters are two metres deep. Local roads in Ban Maharat in Mae Phlu subdistrict remain inaccessible due to landslides which occurred there in May.

Subdistrict (tambon) administration organisation (TAO) chairman Sakhon Uncharoen ordered village heads to alert the public to the threat of floods and landslides, and to check rain levels with the newly-installed rain gauges in the villages.

TAO member Kasem Fongfu said that he wanted the government to dredge the canals to prevent a recurrence.

The death toll of persons killed in flash floods and mudslides on May 22 in the northern provinces of Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phrae, Lampang and Nan stands at 51.

While the five provinces are again battling floods, the hardest-hit is Uttaradit province in which 46 persons have died.

That area is having it's share of bad luck! I hope for the best for the residents of the area.
