Khun Jean, I dont think you should be blaming us for not having the legal versions of XP. If you buy any computer in the UK it automatically comes with windows. I have 2 computers at home both with windows XP. So when i came to Thailand and brought a computer for 72,000Baht how am i supposed to know that ill be getting an illegal version of the product that comes as standard in any other country. But to be honest now that I have the illegal version and can get away with not paying for it, i dont think I will. Microsoft have already had 2 copys out of me so far so im not really that bothered. Its not a matter of 'get over it' its more a matter of what you can get away with in Thailand regarding illegal software.

Thailand is different. :o Here you have to double check everything. But i understand it can happen while you not know it. If it was sold with a genuine copy included in the price, then a visit to the shop is in order.

The 'get over it' is for people who are knowingly using a copy. 'Getting over' a message box and maybe a 10 second wait is not that bad for an illegal copy. Making you aware of it is a also good thing. The biggest problem is that resellers sell illegal copies to unsuspecting customers. That is just a big rip off. Making people aware of that will help. Now that it was in the news several times and on many websites i think people are more closely watching what they are actually buying. I think that is a good thing too.

People who knowingly have an illegal copy should be happy that it is still working. Just disabling it was also an option Microsoft could have used. Microsoft also knows that illegal copies can help sales because people are getting used to a system. Wordperfect was the proof of that. The warning now pushes people to make a decision. But even if 90% of them think "that's it i start using linux', or just live with the warning message you still have 10% more legitimate owners. With more than 60 million illegal copies that is almost 6 million sold copies. Not bad!

And the feeling with Microsoft is that those that go to Linux will come back anyway. :D That is pretty confident.

The licensing can be more friendly for people with more than one computer, and like a few here that have computers in different countries. I have a few PC's and a laptop. A bigger discount for having multiple copies would be nice.

'Getting away' with something is something i don't agree with, but that is each persons own decision to make.

A lot of people want to push Microsoft in a bad position.

I just think they make a great product. A product that gives me a job and a hobby.

Try reading some of the blogs of people who work for Microsoft, they are a very enthousiastic bunch. It says a lot about the working condition.

For me Apple is the one that makes things difficult. But Apple can be ignored, they have only a small market share. They have great hardware and they start going in the right direction with their software. I might change my mind about them in the future.

Linux is something i have no time for. I know computers very well, but the combination of a nice kernel and a lot of shaky or incomplete software ( all the 0.99b versions :D ) is not for me. Although that is also changing rapidly now.

These are just interesting times...

M$ software is way too expensive, just look at the kind of profit they make. This is only possible due to the de-facto monopoly they have in the desktop market coming from their predatory business methods.

Besides most of that perceived "loss" from piracy is not really a loss. Most of the pirated software would never be purchased, and certainly not at the prices asked. If it wasn't possible to get Microslush Windows for free most would be using something else, most likely Linux.

Anyway, I think Bill is doing ok as it is.

Windows Uptime Tool

The easiest thing to do is to start from April if you have not used before so that you have all updates, hotfixes, and patches.

Another method is to utilise a Firefox browser and update from widowsupdate.62nds.com
