IMO Thailand has its soil, amenities and layout to achieve it.

What would it take to, or is feasible in a relative short period of time, to make Thailand that nr 1 holidaydestination in the world for all walks of life....singles, couples and families with children ?

Construct a gigantic theme park populated by gargantuan robotic re-creations of the top 100 most vapid cartoon characters worldwide. Surround this with a plethora of shopping malls all selling the same cheesy merchandize which in turn will be surrounded by restaurants, each vying to sell the unhealthiest but most colorful food. All this to be surrounded by alternately spaced golf courses, man-made lagoons with towering water slides, climbing walls, cable slides and whatever other contrived, adrenalin raising, body bouncing adventure machines that can draw a crowd.

Some wise person once observed: "Nobody ever went broke over-estimating the bad taste of the public."

English speaking, no double pricing, western style accommodation, better transportation, better customer services, and better sanitation, but it is going to be a long while before Thailand can offer those to the tourists. For now, it will have to get by with what it has been working...

By the time Thailand has achieved to have all of the above (english speaking etc.) it will have priced itself out of the market, and it might be more interesting to go elsewhere. Anyplace, really, where the concept of "face" is not deemed to be the most important thing in life....

I'm unfortunately forced to live here (the wife can not leave the country), but I would much prefer Spain (or, in the region, Vietnam). All things considered Spain is quite a bit cheaper for a European to live in nowadays (Healthcare!!) than Thailand.

Also, when a Spaniard smiles, he tends to mean it.
