Handcuffed 7-11 robberies suspect Piriya Tungbanjerd, 41, writhes in agony from a gunshot wound to his right hip after the shoot-out.

PHUKET: -- Police believe they have captured the serial 7-11 store stick-up crook after a shoot-out at one of the franchise's stores in Thalang last night.

The robber, who is believed to have committed at least six armed robberies of 7-11 stores around Phuket in the past week, was apprehended after being shot and wounded when he tried to flee from undercover officers stationed at a 7-11 in Baan Tha Rua on Thepkasattri Road near Heroines' Monument.

The gunfight took place when the suspect tried to rob the store at 23:40pm.

The store happened to be one of several stores across Phuket where undercover police were disguised as store employees in an island-wide sting operation to catch the culprit.

The suspect reportedly fired five shots at the undercover officers as he fled the store.

Officers returned fire, shooting the suspect in the right hip, which left a trail of blood down a side street, leading to a white Nissan March parked about 20 metres from the store.

Police were then able to overpower the suspect, who has been named as Mr Piriya Tungbanjerd, 41.

Inside the car police found items related to the robberies, including a helmet, a knife, a 0.38mm pistol, five bullet casings and a small portable safe, as well as a Territorial Defence Volunteer jacket.

After his arrest Piriya was taken to Vachira hospital under police escort to treat his gunshot wound.

Phuket Police Commissioner, Maj Gen Pachara Boonsit, said undercover police officers were placed in several 7-11 stores around Phuket yesterday (Oct 8) in an attempt to catch the culprit suspected of a string of at least six robberies at 7-11 stores in Thalang, Phuket Town and Rawai; the latest (before the sting operation) being on Tuesday (Oct 7), in which the suspect escaped with B8,573 after forcing staff at gunpoint to empty the tills and a safe.

Commander Pachara said he was grateful to all the officers who put their lives at risk to catch the criminal.

A search of the Piriya's house in Soi Sansuk 1 in Phuket Town this afternoon revealed more evidence of the crimes, including several motorbike helmets and a large safe that the police are still trying to open.

Nice work! Never thought I would say that.

Good to see that the cop aimed at the legs. Same story in the US would have resulted in the robber riddles with at hundreds of bullets.

The BiB were probably lousy shots. The guy fires 5 shots at you and you stand there calmly in the face of fire and try to only wound him in the hip? Only in the movies.

Humans have a survival instinct that would require them to try to make him stop shooting and a shot to the hip could leave him still firing.

But, keep your dreams.

Much more likely is that probably you have no idea at all about what happened.

Your "human survival instinct" in relation to gunshots is novel.

They were actually aiming at the hand holding the gun. They had hoped to not injure him at all because of their humanism and religious beliefs; however, the sight was not adjusted correctly.

WOW. What a weapon. I have shot a lot of 9mm weapons before. I can't imagine how small a bullet is from a 0.38mm cartridge. Maybe the writer meant 38 caliber, which would be a similar in size to an 9mm.

Good catch. .38 no doubt. The 9mm, while only about 2 thousandths of an inch different in diameter than the .38 (meaning the same) is much more powerful than the .38. It develops about twice as much pressure and leaves the barrel about 50% faster (assuming same bullet weights/lengths,) FWIW.

This chap must be a total idiot...How much money could you possibly get robbing a 7-11?

Banks are closed at 11.40pm.

I don't know what time they remove the cash but some shops do a roaring trade in the evenings, so I expect 20-50k would be possible.

Well, just last week he was robbing a 7-Eleven and escaped on a motorcycle.

Seems he hasn't done too badly as he's now got a white Nissan March.

Actually not entirely stupid, his plan was to rob the stores with his motorbike helmet, and then hop in his car and laugh his way back home when the police were looking everywhere for a motorbike rider. Worked pretty well until that last evening.

Maybe they should have shot the gun out of his hand like in the Roy Rogers movies. no police are trained to shoot to wound

All police are trained to shoot centre mass of the body that is the middle of the chest, ideally with hollow points so the the bullet stays in the body does not exit and hit bystanders.

They are taught a man with a knife can stab you from 7 metres away in a one second that is how much time they have to aim and fire before being killed or injured themselves

The old sayings are do the crime do the time, or live by the sword and die by the sword

plus innocent bystanders

Thats why they use hollow points it stays in the body and the damage it does normally results in a put down, safer for bystanders, deadly for the crook

Why is this guy still alive?

What's wrong with these Thai police? Aren't they trained to "double tap - center of body mass?"

Amateur night if you ask me.

What ammo are they using? The "black talons" are the good gear. Even being shot in the hip with one of these would have ended him.

:cheesy: You're reality is either action cop movies or the odd media sensationalized incident. Get a life- old boy.
